Lusa - Business News - Angola: NGO asks president to clarify why Camunda News was shut down

Luanda,March.17,2023(Lusa)-The Justice, Peace and Democracy Association (AJPD) has appealed to the Angolan president to order the minister for media to clarify the legal grounds that prevent the website Camunda News and similar ones from exercising the right to inform.
In a public statement, the AJPD also asked the minister for Telecommunications, Information Technology and Media to formally open dialogue with Camunda News so that even if "there are irregularities, by force of the principle of good faith to which the state's public administration is subject, they can be resolved, putting an end to the permanent suspicion.
At stake is the decision taken by the owner of TV Camunda News to suspend the broadcast of the digital channel through the Youtube and Facebook platforms, alleging the pressure he has been suffering from the authorities, who question the legality of the project's operation.
In the statement, AJPD alerts the national and international community, defenders of press freedom and freedom of expression in particular, and human rights defenders in general, "for the lack of good faith of the public administration of the Angolan State in relation to the treatment to be given to disseminators of content on social networks, as is the case of Camunda News".
According to the association, the public administration of the media and new information technologies "has not acted to promote the exercise and enjoyment of fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution, creating, in bad faith, doubts and obstacles to the implementation of activities that are not prohibited by law."
"AJPD understands that the State public administration is in breach of its duty to contribute to the exercise of the fundamental rights of citizens by inventing obstacles that are neither in the letter nor in the spirit of the Press Law," the document stresses.
The association "draws the attention of the national and international community to the repeated behaviour of the public administration, which intends at all costs to limit, impede, stifle and even put an end to Camunda News, the first attempt to do so having occurred in May 2022, in the period of the Pre-election [campaign]."
Finally, AJPD contests "the repeated behaviour" of the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC), manifested in this case and recalls that the Angolan legal system does not give the investigative body "the power to threaten and terrorise citizens who exercise their rights, within the framework of legality, or even citizens who may be in breach of compliance with the law".
