Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Party leader against pharaonic WTD works - interview

Lisbon,Feb.5,2023(Lusa)-The new leader of IL, Rui Rocha, has called for "common sense" in the management of World Youth Day (WYD) and recalls that taxpayers' money is at stake, adding that "pharaonic works of doubtful utility" do not make sense.
"The president of Portugal made an effusive statement and said we did it. Lisbon, Portugal, we did it, when it was announced that World Youth Day was coming to Portugal. I would say that now we look at this and say 'Lisbon, Portugal, we squandered it'," replies Rui Rocha, in an interview with Lusa, when asked about the controversy surrounding the organisation of WYD.
In the opinion of the new leader of the IL, "there has been a general lack of common sense". The liberal leader believes that, as happens in other major events, "nothing is prepared in time", criticising "negligence in the management" of the whole process.
"There is a lack of management, a lack of common sense in these events and in the management of public activities and public money in general, which at the end of the day is taxpayers' money. That is the concern we have", he told Lusa.
Although things had not been taken care of before, Rui Rocha said that now it is "necessary to take decisions" because otherwise, it is WYD itself that "is at stake" and would be "a shame that Portugal should not run the risk".
"I think that after an initial discussion, we all agree that pharaonic works of doubtful utility, at the very least, do not make sense and, therefore, the principle of common sense should impose itself in the management of these issues," he said.
The interview with Lusa came two weeks after the new leader of IL was elected in what were the first internal elections disputed to choose the successor of João Cotrim Figueiredo.
It was precisely the issue of the non-election of João Cotrim Figueiredo, at the beginning of the legislature, to the vice-presidency of parliament that was one of the points addressed after the challenge made this week by the PS in parliament for the IL to present a new name for the post.
Reiterating that it is a matter for the parliamentary bench, Rui Rocha recalled that the decision was that the party "would eventually reassess this situation if there was a change of circumstances".
"We have a clarification from the PS, but we don't have a clarification from the PSD. It is necessary, in addition, that there is an IL deputy who has the desire to run for the vice-presidency, but we lack clarification of what justified the non-approval of João Cotrim Figueiredo and that is fundamental for us to consider that there is a change of circumstances," he argues.
At the convention of 21 and 22 January, Rui Rocha was elected the new leader of the IL, with the motion presented by his list to the executive committee having obtained 51.7% of the votes, while the list of Carla Castro got 44% of the votes and that of national councillor José Cardoso 4.3% of the votes.
After the tension and division evident in the convention, the new leader says he sees a united party, assuring that the IL will "day by day, step by step, from now on, demonstrate" that it associates courage with irreverence.
"And that irreverence is also about internal discussion afterwards. We cannot want the best of both worlds. We cannot want a party that is internally amorphous and then able to fight a political battle as we want to do", he justifies.
About the statutory revision, a process that will be opened at the National Council at the end of February, and to which he had committed himself during the internal campaign, the new president said that these decisions will be taken by the members in a convention that he hopes will take place until the end of this year.
"What we have identified in the strategy motion and will therefore respect, are two fundamental points. The second point has to do with the autonomous regions of Madeira and Azores, where there is a need, with the expansion that is foreseen for IL, to have some kind of structure that can represent IL before the regional governments", he said.
As regards inertia, there are matters in which, in Rui Rocha's opinion, the presence should be reduced and others in which it should not exist, as is the case of the budget and the accounts.
