Lusa - Business News - Angola: Oil production set to fall by 250,000bpd by 2031 - Fitch Solutions

Hong Kong, Jan.23,2023 (Lusa) - Daily oil production in Angola is set to fall by around 250,000 barrels by 2031, with a drop of some 0.9% already this year for the region as a whole, the consultancy Fitch Solutions has estimated.
Angola, write analysts at Fitch Solutions, a consultancy in the same group as the Fitch Ratings credit rating agency, is expected to see significant declines in oil production during the forecast period due to the lack of large projects coming on stream.
In an analysis of oil developments in sub-Saharan Africa, sent to clients, and which Lusa has seen, the consultants write that a reduction in output in Angola, the region's second-largest producer, will contribute to an overall drop for the region. It sees depleted fields and natural rates of decline resulting in Angola's output growth slowing to 2.7% this year, after "temporary2 growth of 4.2% in 2022, and reaching the beginning of the next decade with 250,000 fewer barrels per day than it currently produces.
Fitch Solutions does not provide specific data for each country, showing only charts that suggest that oil production in Angola will be around 250,000 barrels per day below current production. Figures sent by the government Luanda to the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), for example, point to average daily production last year of 1.1 million barrels.
According to the Fitch analysts, "production of crude oil, liquid natural gas and other liquids in the region is expected to fall by 0.9 percent this year, mainly due to a sharp decline in production in Nigeria, the largest oil producer in sub-Saharan Africa, which was significantly affected by a drop in investments and lack of maintenance at the main wells."
Output in Nigeria this year is expected to drop by 4.6%, affecting overall production in the region, and the situation is not expected to turn around in the coming years.
"Over the longer term, our regional oil production forecast points to countries continuing to struggle to return to pre-pandemic production levels due to the natural decline of some of the major wells and lack of investment in recent years," the analysts write, stressing that new investment is critical for the region if output is to be revived.
The commissioning of new oil wells in the region will keep production trends on positive ground in the coming years, peaking at 4.54 million barrels per day in 2029, before falling to 4.13 million in 2032, the Fitch analysts write, noting that "most of the growth will centre around new discoveries in Uganda, Kenya and Senegal.
"Without these new markets, oil production in the region would fall overall, with maturing wells leading to lower production, with the tax environment and reduced exploration potential lowering investment," they argue.
For Equatorial Guinea, Fitch Solutions estimates that daily production through 2031 will be about 20,000 barrels of oil below the current level, which last year was 81,000 barrels per day, down from the 93,000 the authorities told OPEC they produced.
Fitch Solutions' analysis of crude and gas production in sub-Saharan Africa includes Angola, Cameroon, Chad, Congo, Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritania, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.
