Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Planned tangerine plantation is threat to native forest - environmentalists

Alcácer do Sal, Setúbal, Portugal, Nov. 23, 2022 (Lusa) – The Portuguese environmental association Quercus expressed concern on Wednesday about the dimensions of an agroforestry project planned for Herdade da Batalha, in Alcácer do Sal (Setúbal), warning about the increase of threats and destruction of native forest.
In a statement sent to Lusa news agency, Quercus revealed that the agroforestry project of Herdade da Batalha, in Alcácer do Sal, whose public consultation of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) study ends today, has a "worrying dimension".
At stake, it said, is an intervention area of about 615 hectares "fully within the Comporta-Galé Special Area of Conservation (SAC), of the Natura 2000 Network".
According to the association, this "alleged agro-forestry project is nothing more than an open-air agro-industry, with huge impacts on the forest".
The project foresees the creation of an agricultural area for the production of tangerines that will be sent to a distribution centre in Valencia (Spain) for packaging, distribution and commercialisation, according to the documentation on Herdade da Batalha available on the Participa portal website, consulted by Lusa.
The document states that the project promoter, Azul Empírico, a company of the Aquaterra group, plans to invest €45 million to plant tangerine trees in an area of 543.95 hectares and to install support structures and infrastructures on 71.25 hectares of land.
According to environmentalists, the agricultural area will be set in an area "dominated [by] native pinewoods with interest in producing pine nuts and a great diversity of habitats", which may be "converted" if approved by the government.
The project also provides for a total of "26 boreholes to capture water for irrigation, soil preparation (deforestation, harrowing, cleaning of woody material, ploughing and soil correction) in a total area of around 543.95 hectares.
"The consumption of water from the aquifer is huge, about 3.57 million cubic metres, which will compromise other catchments, including availability for public consumption between Alcácer do Sal and Grândola, as well as favouring saline intrusion with the degradation of the aquifer," the environmentalists argued.
On the Day of the Native Forest, which is marked today, Quercus called on the government "not to approve this and other unsustainable projects", stressing that they contribute to the "destruction" of forest areas.
In the same statement, the association also spoke out against the recent felling of about 300 cork oaks on the Santa Catarina hill, in Vila Nova de Famalicão, as part of a project to install a photovoltaic power plant on 80 hectares of forest land, "without being subject" to an EIA.
And it defended "the focus on decentralised production, namely self-consumption".
