Lusa - Business News - Portugal: We hope new Lisbon airport will not take decades to materialise - president

Lisbon,Sept.23,2022(Lusa)– Portugal's president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, said on Friday he hoped that the construction of the new Lisbon airport would not be dragged out due to a "lack of sustainability in the vision" of political leaders.
"I am pleased that it is apparently and finally possible for us to know when a structural investment will move forward and it moves forward by consensus, which is an airport investment that has been promised for I don't know how many years and which we hope will not take decades or eternities to materialise due to a lack of sustainability in the vision of political leaders," said the head of state, speaking at the closing of the 7th Congress of Certified Accountants in Lisbon.
Prime minister, António Costa, and the leader of the PSD social democrat opposition party, Luís Montenegro, meet this afternoon to discuss the methodology on the future airport solution for the Lisbon region, in a meeting scheduled for 5pm in São Bento (the PM's official residence in Lisbon).
Unlike the only public meeting between António Costa and Luís Montenegro, which took place between the two on July 22, this time the meeting will include the infrastructure minister Pedro Nuno Santos and social democrat vice-president Miguel Pinto Luz, the PSD's "technical interlocutor" on the airport issue.
On Wednesday, Luís Montenegro released a letter sent to the prime minister, in which he reported the conclusion of the process of hearings and internal reflection that the PSD had been conducting since July on the issue and transmitted the five conditions of the party to agree with the methodology to be followed on the future airport of the Lisbon region.
The "immediate implementation" of a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), completed within a year, for the options Montijo, Alcochete "and any other that the government or the structure in charge of making the SEA decide reasoned and technically to include " is one of the premises placed by Montenegro.
Then, the leader of the PSD asks that this assessment is delivered "to personalities of recognized technical, academic and scientific merit" and that it is accompanied by a comparative analysis of costs and implementation deadlines for each of the locations under study, including the necessary "related complementary infrastructures".
In relation to Luís Montenegro's letter, "as to the essentials", António Costa stresses having noted the reaffirmation of the "total availability to achieve the greatest possible convergence" regarding "the development strategy for the airport capacity of the Lisbon region" and, in particular, "the reciprocal acceptance of the methodology to be followed".
On 29 June, the ministry of infrastructure published an order stating that the government had decided to proceed with a new airport solution for Lisbon, which involved moving ahead with Montijo to be operational by the end of 2026 and Alcochete and, when the latter was operational, closing Humberto Delgado Airport.
However, the following day, the order was revoked by order of prime minister, António Costa, leading Pedro Nuno Santos to publicly admit "miscommunication" with the government in the decisions involving the future airport of the Lisbon region.
In a recent interview with TVI/CNN, António Costa said he was very close to having an understanding with the PSD on "the methodology" to be followed for the location of the new Lisbon airport, in order to take a "definitive decision" at the end of 2023.
