Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: Agriculture season promising, depends on more rain in coming days - minister

Praia, Sept.21,2022(Lusa) – Cabo Verde's minister of agriculture and environment, Gilberto Silva, said on Wednesday that this year's agricultural season "looks promising" so far, but remains dependent on more rainfall in the coming days.
At a joint press conference in the city of Praia to take stock of the implementation of mitigation measures adopted by the government in the agri-food sector, the minister said that the situation of the agricultural season is "quite differentiated" between the various counties of the country and there is a multidisciplinary team doing the assessment.
Silva said that it had rained on all of Cabo Verde's islands and that Santo Antão, Santiago and Fogo were the three islands with the most rain-fed agricultural production.
"What we hope is that by the end of September and the beginning of October it rains so that we can have an even better situation than what is being outlined at the moment," he said.
In terms of pasture production, he said that there was a "very good" outlook, while the situation for grain production differed in several counties across the country and the water table had refilled in many of the country's rivers.
On 11 July, the authorities predicted a wetter agricultural season this year, and weather forecasts did not rule out extreme events such as heavy rains, tropical depressions, strong winds and sea disturbances.
For almost four years Cabo Verde had been experiencing the worst droughts in the last 40 years, which had been conditioning agricultural activity, with a drastic reduction in food production and income for rural families.
Since March the country has been dealing with the effects of the war in Ukraine and has taken several mitigation measures in the agri-food sector, such as increasing the bulk grain stock - maize - from 14,000 tonnes to 31,000 tonnes, a 30 percent subsidy on the price of feed for monogastric animals, the opening of public work, food assistance to families, and stabilisation of livestock activity.
As of March, the minister said that there had been a stabilisation of the prices of essential products, but in August they suffered "significant increases," particularly cooking oil (84 percent), sugar (41 percent) and wheat flour (28 percent).
Between March and May a total of 30,497 people were in a food crisis, which increased to 40,093 between June and August, in a situation that, according to the minister, is improving with production after the fall of rains.
He said that there was currently a "stable supply" of basic necessities, especially cereals, with an average coverage period of three months.
The country is also experiencing a deep economic crisis, after a recession of almost 15 percent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2020, due to the lack of tourism caused by the Covid 19 pandemic, a sector that normally guarantees 25 percent of GDP and employment.
The government says that the economy may have grown between 6.5 and 7.5 percent in 2021, driven by the recovery of tourism demand, and forecasts 6 percent growth in 2022, which has been revised to 4 percent due to the economic consequences of the war in Ukraine.
