Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Innovative projects in energy, materials in focus in Sines Tech@Week

Sines, Setúbal, Portugal, Sept.21,2022(Lusa) – The use of three-dimensional technology (3D) in the construction of turbines or metal implants and the transformation of cod and leather waste into purified brine are some of the innovative projects presented on Wednesday in Sines (Setúbal).
More than 10 innovative ideas in energy and materials are being presented as part of Tech@week, an event promoted by the National Innovation Agency, this Wednesday at the Sines Industrial and Logistics Zone (ZILS) to discuss emerging innovation in those two areas.
In a tour made by the Lusa agency to the projects on demonstration, it was possible to see how the use of 3D printing can be useful in the construction of "complex parts" such as turbines, metal implants or 'brackets' for aviation, in a project developed by the Portuguese Institute of Welding and Quality (ISQ).
Using "Additive Manufacturing or 3D printing we are already able to produce complex parts that the industry needs and that, until now, it was not possible to do", explained Paulo Morais and Rodolfo Batalha, giving as an example the prototype of "a turbine" built "in stainless steel".
It has "a complex internal structure that leaves the component much lighter and with a much lower loss of load", said Rodolfo, adding that a company with old equipment that wants to "reuse a part" can do it through this technique.
"We [also] work with metallic implants, such as this prosthesis of a hip, and at the same time we develop alloys, with new materials, that are not toxic to the human body, obtaining the same characteristics," he stressed.
The transformation of leather and codfish waste into purified brine, presented by the Leather Industries Technology Centre (CTIC), is another of the innovative projects taken to Sines, in study for about three years.
The SimbioSalt project is dedicated to "the purification and recycling of brine and contaminated salt from the leather and cod industries, which will then be reintroduced in the tanning industry in the production process," José Cruz, from CTIC, explained to Lusa.
Already in the final phase, the project aimed to develop a process to treat brines, eliminating the organic matter that they have, namely fats and proteins, and also disinfecting them.
The brine "is used to avoid acid swelling, which was done with water and salt, and from this moment [one obtains] the purified, compound solution", which can be used by the automotive, footwear and clothing industries, thus promoting the circular economy.
The inspection of photovoltaic solar parks using drones and the development of a programme to detect their efficiency is another of the ideas presented by ISQ in this exhibition.
According to Bruno Ferreira, it was possible to develop "the methodology of a drone flight plan that collects images of the solar panels" and that allows, among others, to identify the existence of "defective panels", study the "georeference" and control their "temperature".
"We also have another project related to efficiency to try to understand the best time to use the energy that comes from the panels," said the official, estimating that it will be concluded "by the end of this year," in time to respond to investments in solar parks planned for the country.
The development and industrialisation of 2nd and 3rd generation biorefinery units for manufacturing products that substitute oil and the modular integration of thermal insulation systems, production and storage of renewable energy on the façades of non-residential buildings are other projects highlighted in Tech@Week.
