Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Public security police 'sick'; Union calls on officers to protest

Lisbon, Sept. 21, 2022 (Lusa) – Portugal's police union Association of Police Professionals (ASPP/PSP) on Wednesday called on police officers to decide on new protest actions, accusing the PSP (public security police) of being "sick" and pointing to an "attempt to whitewash" over problems by the government and national management.
Considering it "evident and unanimous the need to initiate a set of protests to demonstrate the dissatisfaction of professionals", the largest PSP labour organisation stressed - in a letter addressed to all police officers and to which Lusa had access - "the state of mind of revolt" with the situation of the institution and criticised the attitude of the minister of the interior.
"He has whitewashed the situation", the ASPP/PSP defended, stressing that José Luís Carneiro "intends to resolve the problems with unrealistic and inconsequential promises and also with a dose of charity that brings shame on the police force".
For the union, this attempt at whitewashing is developed "via the various communication campaigns promoted by the political power and supported by the national management" of the PSP. In this sense, the association reiterated that "whitewashing, constant lies and Excel sheets, with questionable figures, will not be the best way of serving the public" on the part of the interior ministry (MAI).
Among the main problems identified in the PSP by this union are the restriction of rights, such as the right to strike, the absence of a promising vision for a career, these circumstances are aggravated by an "exhausted, demotivated, ageing staff, an institution with constant operational constraints, budget limitations, weak and questionable management capacity and a somewhat provincial management culture".
"Such a portrait is perceptible when one notes the low number of candidates for open recruitment competitions, the requests to leave from those who still belong to the institution and the constant barring of those who already have requirements to leave for pre-retirement. This set of realities makes the institution sick", the message sent to police officers reads.
The union challenged police officers to intervene in the "necessary change", with a view to discussing the dignification of their careers, translated into an improvement in salaries, working conditions and respect for the professional condition and status of the PSP. Therefore, the union listed several possibilities of protest in the near future for officers to express their opinion.
"Leaving the police premises in which they work, standing outside them in silence, as a form of protest, between 1pm and 1.30pm, during a week to be defined; having a pedagogical attitude at road level; having a pedagogical attitude at criminal level, answering only to relevant calls; a demonstration at national level, on a day to be defined" or another form of struggle deemed appropriate for protests, according to the letter sent.
