Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Government to finance 257 electric, hydrogen buses for Lisbon, Porto

Lisbon, Sept.21,2022(Lusa)– The Portuguese government will sign on Thursday contracts for the tender to finance 257 electric and hydrogen buses for the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto, announced the minister of environment and climate action on Wednesday.
According to Duarte Cordeiro, who is being heard today at the Environment and Energy Commission of the Portuguese Parliament, the 257 new buses, whose funding corresponds to a support of 48 million euros from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR - the EU post-pandemic bazooka funding programme), join the 893 previously funded through the Operational Programme for Sustainability and Efficiency in the Use of Resources (POSEUR).
"In just over five years, we have renewed the road fleets of public transport with more than 1,100 buses of high environmental performance," stressed the minister, who is responsible for urban transport, noting that "3.5 billion euros are underway or committed to the area of mobility," with 1.7 billion euros corresponding to the expansion of networks.
Duarte Cordeiro also explained that "around 1.2 billion euros have been committed to fare support - either via PART [Programme of Support for Fare Reduction in Transport], since 2019, or via extraordinary support for transport operations, during the pandemic" of Covid-19.
"Without this major funding effort, we would not have ensured the availability of transport during this difficult period and we would not have lowered the price of monthly passes to 40 euros in metropolitan areas," he stressed.
The environment minister also pointed out that "another €871 million" will be allocated to investments in mobility to ensure the projects planned for the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto, with funds inscribed in PT2030 (the partnership agreement between Portugal and the European Commission, setting the major strategic objectives for the application, between 2021 and 2027, of the overall amount of 23 billion euros).
"From 2015 until the end of this decade we will devote €4.3 billion to mobility - almost 2% of national GDP. It is a significant amount of funding that I wanted to mark on a day that celebrates mobility, which for us always means - and will mean - collective, electric and soft mode," he stressed.
Duarte Cordeiro also acknowledged that transport is responsible for "about a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions and 74% of oil consumption in our country", pointing out that the government is "committed to continue changing the mobility paradigm", in order for Portugal to achieve national and European environmental targets.
