Lusa - Business News - Sao Tome: Cost of living crisis dominates Sunday's election campaign

Sao Tome, Sept.21,2022(Lusa) - Nery Costa, 33, sells vegetables at the market in the capital to support her six children, a "very hard" task in the face of rising food prices, an issue dominating Sunday's legislative campaign.
"It's very hard. I have to struggle every day to feed my children," she told Lusa, sitting on a bench inside the Côco Côco market next to a blanket spread on the floor where she displays cabbages, carrots and onions.
Nery's oldest daughter, 16 years old, has had to abandon her studies to help support the family: "She is working, she washes clothes for us", she commented.
Throughout the market, a building where one can do everything from repairing shoes and mobile phones, buying clothes, vegetables, fish and meat, watching films or playing computer games, the lament is repeated among vendors and customers, and many place their hope in the next government to improve the situation.
"I came to buy sausage, chorizo, beans, rice... the price is very high," said a woman, 43 years old and with three children, who said that the current prime minister and candidate for a second term, Jorge Bom Jesus, "could have done more".
"Let's see if Patrice Trovoada can do it. I have faith," she added.
Elsa Pontes, a 21-year-old vendor with a baby daughter, has a bowl full of maspombo fish (the size of sardines) and sells four for 25 dobras (about one euro).
"It's hard, really hard", she lamented, mentioning that "there are no fish". For the young woman, there is little or no hope of better days: "I don't know, nothing will change, it's getting worse every day".
Adjay Fernandes, 27, and a partner sell sacks of rice, the staple food of the San Tomeans, and garlic and onions.
"The price at which we used to buy rice was reasonable, we could sell it and keep some money, but now it's more expensive," he described, reporting that customers "complain a lot" and "even blame the sellers" for the increases. Another vegetable seller, Edna Medeiros, 30 years old and with three children, calls for more support for farmers so that the prices of products can be lowered.
On Sunday, at his first rally after returning to the country, Patrice Trovoada, former prime minister and leader of Independent Democratic Action (ADI, opposition), identified hunger as the country's biggest emergency.
"On the 25th, if they give us an absolute majority, we will start working on an emergency programme. And the urgency is hunger. We will not continue to put up with it like this. We have to solve the problem of hunger. The cost of living is too high. We have to take action," the ADI leader said.
Also, the current prime minister, president of the Movement for the Liberation of Sao Tome and Principe/Social Democratic Party (MLSTP/PSD), Jorge Bom Jesus, placed the economic situation as the country's priority, defending the need to start structural projects such as the deep water port in Fernão Dias, the requalification of the capital and improvement of the international airport, which will create jobs.
