Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Over one million cinema-goers in July, highest since pre-pandemic

Lisbon,Aug.5,2022(Lusa)-Cinemas in Portugal exceeded in July the threshold of one million monthly movie-goers, which had not happened since February 2020, before the pandemic, revealed the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA) on Friday.
According to monthly statistics released by the ICA, in July there were 1,059,303 total audiences in cinemas and about six million euros in box office revenue.
The last time cinema exhibition in Portugal surpassed the monthly threshold of one million cinema-goers was in February 2020, with 1,170,097 tickets issued. After that, it was only in October and December 2021 that the data came close to this figure, with around 900,000 monthly audiences.
Compared to July 2021, July saw a 75% increase in the number of cinema-goers.
In July, the three most popular films in Portuguese cinemas were "Minions 2: The Rise of Gru" (372,349 viewers), "Thor: Love and Thunder" (258,946) and "Top Gun: Maverick" (123,649).
The action comedy "2 Duros de Roer", by Victor Santos, with Fernando Rocha and João Seabra, was the most popular Portuguese film in cinemas in July, with 30,186 viewers.
Premiered on 14 July, this is the nationally produced film most seen in cinemas this year, surpassing Sérgio Graciano's feature "Salgueiro Maia - O Implicado", seen by around 16 thousand people since its premiere in April.
Of the 5.064.824 million movie-goers counted by the ICA this year, only 95.273 are people who saw Portuguese cinema, which represents a quota of 1,9%.
In terms of box office takings, the share is 1.7%, with 49,892 registered in Portuguese cinema, in a total of 29.1 million euros.
