Lusa - Business News - Macau: Associations call for end to zero-case policy

Macau, China, Aug.5,2022(Lusa) - Two associations on Friday advocated new measures to alleviate the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, one wanting a universal cash subsidy, the other an end to the zero-case policy.
The Macau Chinese General Commercial Association today advocated for a universal cash subsidy for residents, but also consumer cards for non-resident workers, who have been shut out of any government support, to combat the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
"First of all, a universal one-time cash subsidy should be provided to combat the [crisis caused by the] pandemic," the association indicated in a statement. The suggestion was presented to the government on Thursday.
The association also advised the authorities to provide 3,000 patacas [€364] in an electronic consumer card for non-resident workers.
The Industrial and Commercial Association of the Northern Area of Macau told Lusa that it hoped that the government would abandon the policy of zero cases, warning of the serious damage of restrictive measures on the economy.
"We hope the government will not continue the operation of the 'zero policy'," said the president, Raymond Wong. "What if in the future there is an outbreak in the community again? A small business cannot survive if it closes again (...) and many have already gone out of business."
The businessman also said that Macau should open the border with Hong Kong.
"I have business in Hong Kong, and I have not been able to travel to Hong Kong for two years. Hong Kong is part of China, why can't we go?", he asked , stressing that the population is vaccinated.
Macau today began administering the fourth dose of vaccine to the entire population, with priority given to the elderly and immunosuppressed patients.
The territory has recorded about 80 infections of Covid-19 and was hit in June this year by the worst outbreak faced since the start of the pandemic, which infected 1,821 people, most of the cases asymptomatic, and caused the death of six elderly people, diagnosed with chronic diseases.
Strict border restrictions, partial confinements and the isolation of parts of the city in line with the zero-case policy imposed by Beijing, the crisis in tourism and the gambling industry have had a major impact on the economy, which is heavily dependent on tourists and casinos.
