Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Businessman Mário Ferreira becomes first Portuguese space tourist

Texas,United States, Aug.4,2022(Lusa)-Businessman Mário Ferreira became the first Portuguese space tourist on Thursday when he made a 10-minute suborbital journey aboard a spacecraft belonging to US aerospace company Blue Origin.
The New Shepard capsule took off from the Texas desert, in the United States, at 14:57 (Lisbon time) and landed near the place of departure at 15:07. The landing of the reusable and fully automatic spacecraft was softened by three parachutes.
The six occupants crossed the barrier that separates the boundary between Earth's atmosphere and space three minutes after take-off and experienced microgravity.
From inside the craft, they shouted effusively and exclaimed expressions such as "unbelievable" and "I am floating". The descent began a minute later.
The booster landed in the same place as take-off at 15:04 and the capsule, which separated from the launcher on descent, landed on the ground at 15:07 in the vicinity.
The flight, Blue Origin's sixth with crew, could be followed live on the website of the company, run by tycoon Jeff Bezos.
Alongside Mário Ferreira, president of the Pluris Investments group, through which he owns a stake in the TVI television station and the Douro Azul cruise company, were Egyptian engineer Sara Sabry, Anglo-American climber Vanessa O'Brien, co-founder of YouTube sports channel "Dude Perfect" Coby Cotton, former telecommunications executive Steve Young and technology expert Clint Kelly III.
Like the 54-year-old Portuguese entrepreneur, Egyptian engineer Sara Sabry has inscribed her country in the history of space tourism for the first time.
Before going into space, Anglo-American Vanessa O'Brien had already achieved the feat of being the first woman to reach the highest mountain, Mount Everest, and the deepest point on the earth's surface, the Mariana Trench.
Mário Ferreira had expressed several years ago his desire to go into space and even bought a ticket for a flight with competitor company, Virgin Galactic.
Questioned by Lusa on Wednesday about the price of the Blue Origin trip, he replied that "it is confidential, but nothing close to the nonsense that has been published in some newspapers".
According to the press, the flight could cost between 200,000 and 300,000 dollars (195,000 to 293,000 euros).
The businessman told Lusa he believes that "soon" there will be orbital 'resorts' "for tourism and scientific experiments" and is considering investing in the aerospace industry.
"This is for me the first flight of what I believe will be the future of space travel. The companies I have been talking to, including this one, have very interesting programmes underway that are not science fiction," he said.
The Blue Origin spacecraft is named after the astronaut (Alan Shepard) who was the first American to reach space, in 1961, and the fifth to step on the surface of the moon, in 1971.
