Lusa - Business News - Portugal: BioReset plans to remove pollutants from waters of waste treatment plants

Porto, Portugal, Aug. 4,2022(Lusa) – Researchers are trying to remove pesticides, pharmaceuticals and microplastics from the waters of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) so that they can be recycled and reused for other purposes, such as irrigating agricultural and sports fields.
"It makes no sense to use treated wastewater to, for example, irrigate agricultural fields if the WWTPs do not remove pollutants," Cristina Deleure Matos, researcher at the Higher Institute of Engineering of Porto (ISEP), told Lusa.
Although the legislation "does not impose it" and the wastewater treatment plants were not "designed" to remove pollutants such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides and microplastics, this is the purpose of the BioReset project, which started in April.
"The fact that WWTPs do not remove pollutants, they become a major source of entry into the environment of these compounds that cause harmful effects on living organisms," stressed the researcher.
At the moment, researchers are developing "analytical methodologies" for the detection and, consequently, removal of microplastics from water, since, for both pesticides and pharmaceuticals, some methodologies had already been validated during the European Rewater project.
"This theme was initiated in Rewater, which served as a basis for this new project, in which we developed some analytical methodology to monitor and study the region", clarified Cristina Deleure Mato, coordinator of the Reaction and Chemical Analyses Group (GRAQ) of ISEP.
These "analytical methodologies" are based on a diagnosis, through which researchers try to understand which emerging pollutants have to be removed, and which are the most adequate methods to do so - even because these techniques are "expensive".
The goal is the same: "to reuse wastewater, safely and sustainably, for other purposes", such as irrigating agricultural and sports fields (golf courses), but also landscaping (outdoor industrial areas and residential areas).
The reuse of these waters may not stop there and may be extended, for example, to the cleaning of floors, flushing toilets, washing cars and fighting fires.
Over the next three years, researchers of the REQUIMTE - Associate Laboratory for Green Chemistry (LAQV) group of ISEP will focus on this matter, which is being developed in collaboration with Wastewater Treatment Plants of the group Águas do Centro Litoral, where pilot and real scale studies will be possible.
