Lusa - Business News - Macau: Casino operator MGM China sees €47.9M Q2 losses

Macau, China, Aug.4,2022(Lusa) – Macau gambling operator MGM China on Thursday announced a loss of 382.4 million Hong Kong dollars (47.9 million euros) for the second quarter of 2022.
In the same period of 2021, MGM China had reported positive adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation) of 116 million Hong Kong dollars (14.5 million euros), according to a statement.
In the first quarter 2022, the company, with two casinos in Macau, also recorded a net profit of 45.7 million Hong Kong dollars (5.5 million euros).
In the second quarter, MGM China posted revenues of 1.1 billion Hong Kong dollars (140.5 million euros), down 53.5 percent on the same period last year.
According to results released by MGM China's 'parent company', US-based MGM Resorts, the drop was mainly due to a 74% decline in baccarat betting in high roller (VIP) rooms.
In November last year, Macau's gambling industry was affected by the collapse of the world's largest VIP betting bookmaker, Suncity, when Macau authorities remanded then group chief executive Alvin Chau in custody.
Gambling revenues in Macau lost 95.3% year-on-year in July to MOP398 million (48 million euros), the worst result since 2003.
The revenue collected by casinos in July fell to the lowest since the Statistics and Census Bureau started collecting monthly data in January 2003, at a time when the city had just one gambling operator.
According to figures from the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), in the first seven months of 2022, casinos collected 26.7 billion patacas (3.2 billion euros), down 53.6% from the same period last year.
Macau, the gambling capital of the world, is the only place in China where casino gambling is legal.
Three concessionaires operate in the territory: Sociedade de Jogos de Macau (SJM), Galaxy, Wynn, and three sub-concessionaires, MGM, Venetian and Melco.
The companies have accumulated unprecedented losses since 2020 and the government has been forced to resort to the extraordinary reserve to respond to the crisis, not least because about 80 percent of government revenue comes from gambling taxes.
The government on Friday launched a public tender for the award of six licences to operate casino gambling, with a maximum term of ten years.
Each of the bidders will have to pay a deposit of at least 10 million patacas (1.22 million euros).
