Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Space Prize Foundation holding competition to inspire young women

Lisbon, Aug. 4, 2022 (Lusa) - The Space Prize Foundation, which promotes space literacy, has announced, in partnership with entrepreneur Mário Ferreira, who is set to become the first Portuguese space tourist on Thursday, the Space Prize Portugal, aimed at young women.
Space Prize Portugal is "a competition designed to encourage and inspire young women to pursue careers in the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) sector."
According to a statement sent to Lusa on Wednesday, the Space Prize Foundation said that the five finalists and the two winners of the award will receive, respectively, "a year of mentoring with a leader in the space industry" and "the opportunity to experience the absence of gravity in space when they take an 'Air Zero G' flight", with Mário Ferreira.
The Space Prize Foundation says that, "in recent decades, the composition of space industry workers has not been representative of Earth's human diversity", and "less than 12.5% of people who have travelled into space are women".
Within the executive presidencies in the sector, women "represent only one in five leaders in the aerospace and defence industry, even though space is one of the fastest growing sectors in business and innovation," the statement said.
For the executive director of the Space Prize, Kim Macharia, quoted in the release, "the space industry will never live up to its full potential until its workforce becomes more representative of the global population.
Mário Ferreira, quoted in the same text, said that the Space Prize "inspires a new generation to claim opportunities and share their voices".
Laetitia Garriott de Cayeux, CEO of Global Space Ventures and juror of the Space Prize, expressed her "enthusiasm for the positive and significant impact that this opportunity will bring to women in Portugal" and around the world.
The Space Prize Portugal will be managed by Manuel Vaz, "founder of Expanding World, and is open to Portuguese students between the ages of 18 and 22".
"Applications will be accepted between September 4 and October 30 and reviewed by a specially selected panel of space industry experts and gender equality advocates, with the winners announced on December 21," the statement further read.
The autonomous and reusable capsule New Shepard of the Blue Origin company where Mário Ferreira, 54 years old, and five other crew members will take off from the Texas desert, in the United States, having the launch "window" scheduled to begin at 14:30 (Lisbon time) on Thursday.
It is the sixth suborbital flight with crew from Blue Origin, the aerospace company run by US tycoon Jeff Bezos, which debuted in space travel on 20 July 2021.
If all goes well, like other flights, the six crew members will cross the barrier between the Earth's atmosphere and space and experience microgravity, in a short journey of little more than 10 minutes between take-off (propelled by a thruster) and landing (softened by a parachute). None of the crew will have to pilot the spacecraft, as it is fully automatic.
The logo of Blue Origin's sixth manned flight bears the surnames of its six crew members, who have been assigned certain symbols. Mário Ferreira is represented by a caravel, in an allusion to the Portuguese heritage of exploring the seas during the Discoveries.
Space tourism, for now only accessible to the wealthy, had a 'boom' in 2021, the year of debut in this niche market of the aerospace companies Blue Origin, Virgin Galactic and SpaceX.
