Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Portugal's president to visit next week for summit meeting

Lisbon,July.4,2022(Lusa)- Portugal's prime minister is due to travel to Maputo on 11 and 12 June for the 5th Luso-Moçambican Summit, and will also have institutional meetings with the Mozambican political authorities, businessmen and the Portuguese community.
António Costa's trip to Mozambique was announced in a statement issued on Monday by his office.
Concerning the 5th Luso-Moçambican Summit, the Portuguese government said it "aims to deepen bilateral relations and sign several cooperation instruments.
António Costa's trip programme, besides the summit, includes political meetings with the president of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, and with the speaker of the country's parliament, Esperança Bias.
The prime minister will also have meetings in the economic area with Portuguese businesspeople in Mozambique and is expected to attend a reception with the Portuguese community in that country.
António Costa's visit comes three and a half months after Portugal's president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa made his third visit to Mozambique as Portugal's head of state.
On 20 May, in Maputo, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa assured the commitment of the prime minister, António Costa, to the next bilateral summit between Portugal and Mozambique, which he considered "crucial".
In a meeting with about 400 Portuguese residents in Mozambique, de Sousa maintained that relations between the two countries are on an "excellent path" and "moving forward on all fronts.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa reiterated that as soon as the new Portuguese government takes office, "a date will be set for the" bilateral summit, which was scheduled for November last year and was postponed due to the snap parliamentary elections in Portugal.
"We also want the summit. The summit is crucial. I speak for myself, but I speak for the prime minister," the president of Portugal said, adding that "the predisposition of the prime minister is the same."
On the same occasion, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa promised to return to Mozambique in August this year to attend the reopening, after restoration, of the cathedral of Quelimane, the provincial capital of Zambezia.
