Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Tourism plays key role in regenerating regions - government

Pinhel, Guarda, Portugal, June.22,2022 (Lusa) - Portugal's secretary of state for tourism, commerce and services, Rita Marques, acknowledged on Wednesday, in Pinhel, in the district of Guarda, that the tourism sector has "a key role at the level of territorial regeneration".
"Tourism is a force for good, it is a force for good. And, naturally, it has an immense responsibility to project the regions, but it also has, above all, a responsibility to regenerate the regions", she said.
Rita Marques assured that there are few sectors of activity that contribute to territorial cohesion as tourism and recognised that the sector has "a fundamental role at the level of territorial regeneration".
The governor was speaking in Pinhel, where she marked the launch of the concession tender, under the Revive programme, for the redevelopment of the building known as Casa Grande, for tourism purposes.
She said that today tourism has assumed the responsibility of finding an economic operator that can make that building "a space for everyone".
"This is a great responsibility that assists tourism. And, therefore, we are here, body and soul, showing that we are capable of regenerating regions", she declared.
At the end of the session, Rita Marques told journalists that the concession tender launched today for the requalification of Casa Grande provides for the payment of a rent and contemplates the commitment of the investor "to make the necessary investments to remodel the place, redevelop the place and use it for tourism".
The mayor of Pinhel, Rui Ventura, said that his expectations regarding the Revive programme are "many" at a time when the county "is clearly on an upward trajectory with regard to attracting tourists and consequently attracting investment in tourism".
"The launch of Revive for the rehabilitation of Casa Grande represents the hope, on the one hand, to recover an emblematic building and, on the other, to create a type of tourist attraction that we do not yet have and that will complement the various projects that have been emerging over the past few years in the city and the county," he admitted.
According to the mayor, the Casa Grande, also known as "Solar dos Condes de Pinhel", which once housed the Pinhel Town Hall, is a baroque noble house, which was built in the first decade of the 18th century next to the town walls.
The building, currently unoccupied, once belonged to the Antas e Menezes family, later passed to the Noronha e Avilez family, and at the end of the 19th century it was sold to the Count of Pinhel.
The property, which was occupied during the French Invasions, in 1810, became, in the 20th century, the headquarters of the Grémio da Lavoura and, in the years 1973-1974 the agricultural cooperative gave the building to the Pinhel Town Council.
The vice president of Portugal Tourism, Teresa Monteiro, also present at the session, noted that the Revive programme encompasses, at national level, a total of 52 properties.
Revive is "a successful programme," she said, indicating that there are 25 properties put up for tender, 19 with signed contracts and two with refurbishment completed and operation started (Coudelaria de Alter do Chão and Convento de São Paulo, Elvas).
The Hotel de Turismo da Guarda was also included in the programme, but both tenders received no bids.
The secretary of state for tourism, commerce and services said that the process is being dealt with by the mayor and that news will be announced soon.
Rita Marques also went to the municipality of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, having visited Barca d'Alva and the Historic Village of Castelo Rodrigo, where she participated in the ceremony of the delivery of the award "Best Tourism Villages UNWTO" to the community.
