Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Area of rice paddies shrinks by 5% - official

Lisbon,June.22,2022(Lusa)- The area dedicated to growing rice in Portugal is expected to decrease by 5% this year compared to last, while the potato area and the productivity of autumn-winter cereals, cherries and peaches are expected to decline by 10-15%, Statistics Portugal (INE) said on Wednesday.
"Agricultural forecasts, as of 31 May, point to the normal establishment of spring crops, in an environment strongly marked by drought, the escalation of costs with means of production, the rise in prices of agricultural products and the suspension of trade with Russia and Ukraine," the INE said.
In the case of rice, sowing "has been running normally", with the 5% decrease in the area sown due "exclusively to maintenance works on the Alcácer and Grândola irrigation channels" (already being conducted in 2020).
In Baixo Sorraia, the INE estimates that the area will increase "slightly, due to the conversion of permanent pasture areas into rice paddies".
In the case of potatoes, the expected decline in the area of 10% in irrigated and 15% in non-irrigated resulted from "meteorological, economic and technical/agronomic factors", namely the "lack of rainfall and soil moisture, increased prices of means of production, particularly fertilisers and fuel, and a ban on the use of chlorpropham-based synthetic anti-hailants".
Although the harvest of non-irrigated potatoes has started "without difficulties, with tubers of reasonable quality and size," the INE stated that "in the West region, where this crop is more representative, the potato plants show a weak vegetative development, and a drop of 60% is expected compared to 2021.
Concerning the planting of tomatoes for industry, "it took place without interruptions and in good conditions, with the area contracted between producers and the processing industry of 16.5 thousand hectares, which corresponds to an increase of 4% compared to last season".
"Despite the environment strongly marked by uncertainty caused by the increase in prices of means of production, producers reacted positively to the prospect of an increase in the price of tomatoes for the industry when signing contracts," notes INE.
As for autumn-winter cereals, "the impact of drought on yields is expected to correspond to a decrease of between 10% and 15%, which, combined with a historically low sown area, will worsen dependence on external supplies.
"The autumn-winter cereals are fully matured and generally show poor vegetative development. Globally, the forecasts point to a generalised decrease in the productivity of cereals by 10%, and by 15% for durum wheat and oats," INE states.
As for fruit trees, particularly stone fruits, "weather conditions were not favourable", and thus a 15% decrease in productivity is expected for cherries and 10% for peaches.
According to INE, the conditions of cherry development "were different in the main producing regions": While in Ribadouro, the orchards "show a good vegetative aspect and high-quality fruit, and productivity should be identical to last season", in Cova da Beira "late frosts and low night temperatures in April caused some drop in fruit and a delay in vegetative development, predicting a decrease in productivity of 25%".
Although this overall estimated drop may still change, given the "existence of many varieties of cherry trees with different harvesting seasons and the fact that it is a fruit very susceptible to weather conditions", INE believes that "it should be around 15% compared to 2021".
Peach orchards will also see a drop in productivity compared to the previous season, "affected during flowering by precipitation, low night-time temperatures and frost formation, which damaged pollination and delayed vegetative development".
This scenario, "together with the strong winds of April", contributed to the "physiological fall of the small fruits, whose development appeared to be consolidated, thus predicting a 10% decrease in productivity".
