Lusa - Business News - REPORT: Diving spearheads tourism

Dili,June.22,2022(Lusa)-Debbie, as one of the dugongs that live in the waters north of Timor-Leste is nicknamed,was kind enough to show up on Sunday, almost as a celebration, for Portuguese Fátima Alves' 500th dive.
Common in these waters, dugongs are, along with whales, dolphins and reefs, considered among the most biodiverse in the world, the main attractions of what is clearly the spearhead of the still-emerging tourism in Timor-Leste.
Before the Covid-19 pandemic, and in addition to the many residents of the country already dedicated to diving, the diving tourism segment was growing fast, with tourists from several countries visiting Timor-Leste specifically to see its waters.
Although relatively unknown, Timor-Leste's destination has been standing out among the international diving community in recent years, especially after in 2012, marine scientists Mark Erdmann and Gerry Allen assessed the Ataúro region on a Conservation International project.
That first assessment indicated that the area was 7th most diverse in fish diversity out of 50 locations in the Coral Triangle.
In 2016 a more detailed study went even further, with scientists identifying 252 species of coral fish in Ataúro's waters, more than anywhere else on the planet, leading Jerry Allen to consider the area analysed "the most biodiverse in the world".
A teacher in Timor-Leste, Fatima Alves, started diving in February 2019 after a few years of constantly putting off a challenge that many foreigners and some Timorese have responded to.
"A colleague of ours came and met all the diving schools, and we all went to do the Open Water course. The first place I dived was in Tasi Tolu bay," he recalled to Lusa.
"Ataúro is beautiful. It fills the eye. It has a lot of colour, a lot of variety of fish. But I really like Tasi Tolu which is where you find the smallest, most unexpected things", she explains.
In just three and a half years, Fátima Alves has made 500 dives - besides her teachers. She is one of the most experienced divers in the country - 200 of which were in the last year alone.
"The pandemic helped. Many people left. People didn't know what to do. Dili became a calm and tranquil paradise, and without restrictions, I went diving. I'm a bit addicted to this," she said.
"It's good to dive in Timor because the waters are calm, the sea is beautiful, and there is a huge amount of animal life. But now I think I'd dive anywhere. I love being in the sea. I think it is the closest sensation to flying", he confesses.
A habit that in Timor-Leste also has a great particularity: unlike other diving destinations, where the tourists seem to be more than the fish, here the groups are much smaller.
"Diving is therapy. When you're down there, you meditate. And one of the best things is that there are no crowds. In several places, for example, you have more divers than fish. Not here", he said.
Despite all the potential, Timor-Leste still feels the difficulties of the little development that the tourism sector has had in the country, with a lack of basic infrastructures.
Fátima Alves notes, for example, the lack of a hyperbaric chamber - essential in case of decompression problems - or better support infrastructures in some diving sites.
Cássio Schumacher, from the Aquática diving school, in Díli, explained to Lusa that the essential thing is to invest in basic infrastructures - such as a pontoon for access to recreational boats that take divers - and more promotion of the destination.
"We don't already need a national network of infrastructures. We can start in Dili, establishing the accessible destinations, before expanding to other places. And the pontoon in Dili is an excellent bet," he said.
It is also essential, however, to publicise the destination, getting to know a place that is still unknown, where travel is expensive, but that is "really worth it".
"There are very experienced people here in diving, with experiences in great diving sites. And Ataúro is world-class diving, with reefs considered among the most biodiverse in the world, a sign in the theme of how special the marine life is here," he said.
Another major attraction, he stresses, are the whales, common on the north coast of Dili and one of the richest aspects of the country's seas.
"At migration time, you can sit on the shore and watch the whales walk by. And this can be the tip of the spear for maritime tourism. You come to see the whales because you can't find them in other places," he said.
"So come to Timor, it's worth it. It's expensive, but it's worth it. In diving, the operators are very experienced, and the reefs will leave an incredible memory," he stressed.
