Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: New Mindelo cruise terminal will put Sao Vicente island on international tourist map - PM

Mindelo, Jan. 19, 2022 (Lusa) – Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, on Wednesday set out a plan to put the island of São Vicente on an international level of greater "tourist reference" with the future cruise terminal, which should be ready within 22 months.
"What we really need are scales of size, in terms of the number of tourists that can visit, spend, be entertained, have access to various services and various products. To make the market viable from the food angle, creative industry, fishing products, to transform Carnival into a real industry, for that we need scale of dimension, quality and income," he said.
In his speech at the launch of the construction of the Mindelo Cruise Terminal, budgeted at almost 27 million euros, he said that the work is part of a set of investments to position the island as a tourist destination of reference in the archipelago, but also in the African region and the Mid Atlantic.
"The area here in Porto Grande is destined to be a specialised area for transporting passengers from cruise tourism, yachts and accommodating international events linked to nautical sports," he added.
For the chief executive, this will make it possible to complement the economies of the north of the country, namely the islands of São Vicente, Santo Antão, São Nicolau and Santa Luzia.
He said that in 2023 the biggest regatta in the world, the "Ocean Race" will pass through Mindelo's Porto Grande, which, he considered, will not only be a moment in which the island will have greater visibility, but also the placing of São Vicente on the international water sports map.
"We are preparing a set of integrated investments within this concept of development of the special economic zone so that São Vicente is endowed with an infrastructure to receive other events linked to the sea, pontoons for yachts, nautical club. Bringing back the physical memory, because the collective memory exists, the use of the Matiota area, the trampoline, with the requalification of the space, the connection to the seafront, between Matiota and Laginha beach," he said.
All the investments underway, he continued, are part of the "strong focus on boosting the economy of São Vicente".
"Because it is through the economy that we create conditions to offer durable and quality employment, eliminate extreme poverty and reduce absolute poverty. It requires public and private investments and active policies, in the sectors of employment, qualification and entrepreneurship".
The project provides for construction of a 400-metre-long, 20-metre-wide pier bridge, which will allow the berthing of two cruise ships with a length of up to 350 metres and capacity for 4,000 passengers.
"We also plan to extend and create a small land platform, with 2,700 square metres, which will create a bridge between the existing port platform and with the pier we will build," explained Pedro Branquinho, an engineer representing Portugal's Mota-Engil.
The project also includes the rehabilitation of the fishermen's pier and dredging work of the port basin and the pier, the construction company's engineer said.
As announced on 15 April 2021, the Portuguese-Cape Verdean consortium made up of Mota-Engil and Empreitel Figueiredo will build the Mindelo Cruise Terminal, one of the largest public works of recent years in Cabo Verde.
The country plans to receive around 200,000 cruise ship tourists per year with the work, which is co-financed by the ORIO Fund, of the Netherlands, and by the OPEC (Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries) Fund for International Development.
