Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Environmentalists call for more transparency in lithium concession process

Lisbon, Jan. 19,2022 (Lusa) - The environmentalist association ANP/WWF recommended on Wednesday that the government prove whether it is feasible to explore for lithium in Portugal, considering that the process has been marked by a lack of transparency.
"Between what the Portuguese State promises and what it is doing there is still a great distance," the association said in a document released today pointing out that despite the promise of no project going ahead without an environmental impact study, "there are projects that already have concession contracts for the right to extract signed," making the impact assessment "only pro-forma".
The government must present a study on "the economic-strategic viability of lithium exploration in Portugal" and that before there are concession contracts "for any lithium mining project" there must be an environmental impact assessment.
Before thinking of creating a "lithium chain" in Portugal, making Portugal a country where the extraction and processing of ore for battery manufacture, ANP / WWF demands that a new strategic environmental assessment is made with all the sites for which there are already concession contracts and those in prospect.
Minas do Barroso (Boticas), Argemela (Covilhã and Fundão) and Romano (Montalegre) are three examples of projects that "got off to a bad start", the WWF points out, arguing that it's necessary to guarantee that prospection and exploration stays outside conservation areas and their surroundings.
It also defends "total transparency" of everything that has to do with a lithium chain in Portugal and "facilitated public access" to documents and public participation "in critical phases".
