Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Azores, Chinese entrepreneurs ink deal to boost investment, exports

Angra do Heroísmo, Azores, Oct.19,2021(Lusa) – The Angra do Heroísmo Chamber of Commerce (CCAH) and the Portugal-China Chamber of Commerce for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (CCPC-PME) have signed a protocol that aims to strengthen trade relations between Azorean and Chinese businesspeople.
"Exporting to China is complex, from a legal point of view, and from now on all Azorean companies will find in the Portugal-China SME Chamber of Commerce the necessary interlocutor to facilitate the entire administrative and bureaucratic process with Chinese entities," said Marcos Couto, president of the CCPC-PME, on the sidelines of the protocol signing.
The protocol, signed on Monday in Angra do Heroísmo, on the island of Terceira, identifies the agri-food sector and tourism as areas of possible collaboration between businesspeople from the Azores and China.
According to Marcos Couto, there is the possibility of attracting Chinese investment to "leverage some companies" in the Azores, but also to export products such as "milk, powdered milk, cheese and butter, eventually.
"There are niche markets where our products can enter. We will never have the capacity for large scale, but we will have capacity within niche markets and that is what we will work on," he pointed out.
For him, transport will not be a constraint, but "there are bureaucratic issues that have to be overcome, in terms of registering Azorean companies with the Chinese government to allow for such exports.
"The support of the CCPC-PME may be essential in overcoming this issue," he stressed.
He also said that the CCAH would try to "extend" this agreement to the Azores Regional Government.
President of the CCPC-PME, Y Ping Chow, admitted that doing business with China "is not easy," claiming that Azorean businesspeople have to "study better and see the capacity to supply," and "see prices and transport".
"As long as there are companies with capacity, with a good price, with a good article and that is of interest to Chinese consumers, we have 18 points that can serve the Azores," he said, claiming that the CCPC-PME has representation in 18 Chinese provinces and cities.
Y Ping Chow considered that tourism "can be an interesting activity," not to attract Chinese tourists to the Azores, but investors "looking for business opportunities."
"There is the possibility of bringing some entrepreneurs here, mainly from the milk and cheese sectors or even tourism and the sea economy," he stressed.
The CCPC-PME is "trying to create a development fund to invest in agri-food and tourism," which could reach 30 million euros.
Y Ping Chow also noted the potential of the sea economy in the Azores, an area he said was "very interesting and very important to China.
"Our chamber has a protocol with the Atlantic World, which is an association that has links with 56 coastal cities. I can make this connection between the Azores and the Atlantic World," he said.
He recalled that the city of Angra do Heroísmo, where he signed the agreement, has "a twinning with a Chinese city," claiming that one can "take advantage to improve this relationship between the chambers."
"The city that has twinning has seven or eight million [people]. If we can work well with this city, it is already a very large market for Azores companies," he stressed.
