Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Northern tourist board asks TAP if it will restart Brazilian, US routes

Porto, Sept.13,2021 (Lusa) – The chairman of the Porto and northern Portugal Tourism Board (TPNP) on Monday called on TAP to reveal "quickly" whether the ongoing restructuring plan provides for the re-establishment of routes with the Brazilian and US markets.
Luís Pedro Martins said that the Brazilian and American markets are "two very important markets for tourism in Porto and northern Portugal".
"The Brazilian market is the third largest source market for the Porto and northern region and is the fifth largest market for the country," he said, recalling that because of the pandemic the region only reopened "very recently to the American and Brazilian markets.
For Luís Pedro Martins, it is essential to know TAP's plans so that the TPNP, together with the Northern Regional Development Coordination Commission (CCDR-N) and Tourism of Portugal, can jointly draw up strategies for the region's tourism future.
"It is important to know what TAP is going to do so that we can align or design other strategies, namely with other [airlines]. And, for this, we must also count on the CCDR-N and Portuguese Tourism entities", he considered.
He stressed that one of the priority projects for the region is "air connectivity", something that is a critical success factor for the region.
TAP plans to put the restructuring plan into effect in October, according to the airline's CEO, Christine Ourmières-Widener, in an interview published in the company's internal newsletter, to which Lusa had access.
TAP SA reduced its losses in the first half of this year to 493.1 million euros, a recovery of 15.3%, or 88 million euros, compared to the negative results of 582 million euros in the same period of the previous year.
Since 31 December 2020, a total of 1,302 employees have left the company, representing a 16% reduction in the workforce, and from the negotiation of agreements with unions through which salary revisions were defined."
TAP's plan will focus on "restructuring costs" and adjusting capacity to demand. The CEO also highlighted the importance of the company being closer to customers, as well as "a workers' dimension" that is being developed "now" and of which she gave no further details.
In September last year, TAP announced it would fly to Ibiza, Fuerteventura and Zagreb in the summer of 2021, with two new routes to Tunisia and one to Morocco also planned, at a time when the restructuring plan was already being drawn up.
At the time, the airline said in a statement that the new routes for the summer of 2021 fit into the "connecting network strategy" between Europe, the Americas and Africa, with the company "taking advantage of seasonal expansion opportunities to plan and optimise its network of destinations".
