Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Final allegations in Ricardo Salgado trial scheduled for 22 October

Lisbon, Sept.13,2021(Lusa)- The closing arguments in the trial of the former president of the Espírito Santo Group (GES), Ricardo Salgado, were scheduled today by the collective of judges for the afternoon of 22 October, a day on which three to four witnesses will still be heard.
Judge Henriques' decision was received with some reservations by the former banker's defence lawyers, Francisco Proença de Carvalho and Adriano Squilacce, who suggested another date should be set, given the relevance of the witnesses scheduled for that day and the time associated with their interviews.
At issue are the hearings of Jean-Luc Schneider, former director of ESFIL and GES employee responsible for arranging transfers from the ES Enterprises bank account at Banque Privée Espírito Santo, Alain Rukavina, lawyer and liquidator of ES International, Ricardo Gaspar Carvalho, director and partner of Shu Tian, and Father Avelino Alves, who should have been heard today but did not attend.
Ricardo Salgado's representatives wanted the allegations not to start on the day scheduled for these hearings. They did not even rule out the possible call of the former banker to give statements, which scenario is possible until the start of the allegations.
Concerning this fifth session of the trial of the related and separate Operation Marquês case, underway in the Lisbon Criminal Court, the judges heard only three of the six witnesses initially planned, due to the absence of Avelino Alves and the dismissal of the other two witnesses - Isabel Vaz, executive chairwoman of the Luz Saúde group, and the defendant's wife, Maria João Salgado.
The first to give evidence was economist João Cardão, who worked between 2004 and 2014 at GES, initially at the company ES Resources and later at Rioforte, which, according to the witness, "managed about €3bn of assets and had five or six business areas in Portugal", in addition to several businesses in South America and Africa.
Cardão clarified that, in both entities, he always answered to Gonçalo Cadete, who was also responsible for his entry into GES. He never reported to Ricardo Salgado, adding that he never met the group's former leader personally.
Next, two employees of Margar company were heard: farm foreman Inácio Falcato and accountant Ricardo Charneca, who confirmed that ES Enterprises came to own 30% of the agricultural company managed by businessman Henrique Granadeiro in 2016.
The trial continues on Tuesday from 09:30 with the scheduled hearings of witnesses Carlos Silva, Yves Alain Morvan, Tereza Araújo and Pedro Brito e Cunha, this being the last session scheduled until October 22.
Ricardo Salgado is on trial for three crimes of abuse of trust due to transfers of more than €10 million in the context of Operation Marquês, from which this process was separated.
