Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Azores power company wants 44% geothermal energy on Terceira by 2025

Praia da Vitória, Portugal, July 20, 2021 (Lusa) - The Azores electricity company (EDA) on Tuesday estimated that, by 2025, the Pico Alto Geothermal Power Plant would be responsible for 44% of the energy consumed on the island of Terceira, increasing renewable energy on the island to 60%.

"We hope that in 2025, with these two phases of investment, we can reach 60% of renewable energy on Terceira and 44% will be from geothermal energy, even though geothermal energy currently guarantees only 14.5%," Nuno Pimentel, chairman of the EDA and EDA Renováveis, told reporters.

The chairman of the Azorean electricity company was speaking on the sidelines of a visit to the Pico Alto geothermal power plant in Praia da Vitoria, which marked the start of drilling work on three new geothermal wells.

If the results of the three new wells are as expected, the plant will triple its production, which currently averages 2.5 megawatts and, at most, 3.5 megawatts, making it "economically viable.

"If the wells' production corresponds to what we expect it will make it possible to expand this power station with an additional seven megawatts and have an installed capacity of around 10 megawatts at the Pico Alto power station, which is what our experience tells us is economically viable for a facility of this nature," Pimentel said.

Drilling the three new wells should take about six months, at an overall investment of €26 million until 2025.

The president of the EDA also estimates that, at the beginning of 2022, a system of storage batteries and network energy control may begin operating on the island of Terceira, which will contribute to the increased use of renewable energy.

According to Nuno Pimentel, geothermal energy, which only exists on the islands of Terceira and São Miguel, where there is enough to make the investment economically viable, is relevant because it can produce continuously throughout the year.

"It does not depend on the time. It does not depend on the sun. It does not depend on rain. It gives us another guarantee in terms of the public supply of electricity. It is a resource that should have a relevant priority in our context of the energy transition," he said.

On Sao Miguel island, six new wells were recently opened, which will enter a testing phase, with the expectation of increasing the penetration of geothermal energy from 42% to 60%.

The Azorean regional secretary for transport, tourism and energy, Mário Mota Borges, stressed the importance of geothermal energy, "not only in terms of the power that can be made available but above all in the regularity with which this power will be available.

According to the governor, investment in the Pico Alto Geothermal Power Plant will contribute so that the Region can achieve the target of 60% penetration of renewable energy, thus reducing dependence on external sources and fossil fuels.

"The production of energy from geothermal energy is already a step towards the new millennium and towards our ability to maintain the quality of life with alternative energy sources, which do not have a negative contribution to the environment," he said.
