Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: Germany lowers risk, vaccinated tourists can return

Praia, June 23,2021(Lusa)-The German government has lowered the classification of Covid-19 in Cabo Verde from being a high incidence area to basic risk, maintaining the obligation of quarantine on return to Germany, which can be lifted with vaccination.

According to information from the German government seen on Wednesday by Lusa, Cabo Verde is no longer part of the group of countries considered high risk due to the prevalence of Covid-19, going down to the classification of basic risk areas (both with the obligation of registration at the entrance and home quarantine of ten days), on a scale that also provides the classification of countries by the presence of variants of concern (quarantine of 14 days).

However, the German government foresees that travellers coming from basic risk areas may end their quarantine prematurely by submitting a negative test for Covid-19, proof of recovery from the disease or a valid vaccination certificate with one of the vaccines recognised by European authorities.

Cabo Verde was included on the German government's list of high-incidence areas for Covid-19 from 25 April 2021 to 19 June, with Cabo Verde's prime minister today acknowledging that this update is "good news".

"This decision will allow us to strengthen the intention of the TUI group [German, largest international tour operator] to better organise and respond to the great demand of people, especially German tourists who want to travel to Cabo Verde without the need to comply with quarantine," said Ulisses Correia e Silva.

Recalling that in practice, only a negative Covid-19 test result or proof of vaccination will be required from German tourists on their return from Cabo Verde, the Prime Minister said it was "an incentive".

"So that other countries can follow the same analysis, both for the current incidence rate at the national level, with a downward trend, and for the ongoing vaccination programme with a very positive balance," he said.

Tourism represents about 25% of Cabo Verde's Gross Domestic Product. Still, due to restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the sector has been at a virtual standstill since March 2020, causing an economic crisis in the archipelago.

The incidence rate of Covid-19 in Cabo Verde has fallen again in the last 14 days, to 159 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, down from 224 in the previous period, the national health director announced on Monday.

"As we have seen in recent weeks, there has been a trend towards improvement in the epidemiological situation in the country, and we can verify this in the positivity rate, which despite still being over 5% - ideally it should be lower - we continue to see a reduction," said Jorge Noel Barreto.

During the critical period of the pandemic in the archipelago, Cabo Verde registered an incidence rate of Covid-19 at 14 days (an indicator used internationally) of 727 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, from 26 April to 9 May, but which has since fallen.

He said that in the last 14 days, from 7 to 20 June, Cabo Verde had analysed 11,773 samples, which showed 898 new cases of Covid-19, which corresponded to a positivity rate of 7.6%.

In the previous period, from 24 May to 06 June, 14,952 samples were analysed, which identified 1,754 new cases of Covid-19, corresponding to a positivity rate of 12%.

Since 31 March, Cabo Verde had been recording consecutive highs of new infections, almost every day above 200, having recorded 417 cases on 5 May, when the maximum before this period was 159, on 11 October 2020.

This trend has reversed in the last month, with the number of new daily cases falling to a minimum of 32 infected on 14 June, the lowest since 22 March (26 cases).

Cabo Verde had recorded 32,111 cases of the new coronavirus since 19 March 2020 (when the first infected person was diagnosed in the archipelago), spread across all 22 municipalities of the nine inhabited islands, according to data from the Ministry of Health, and 284 deaths.
