Lusa - Business News - Angola: BFA 2020 net profit down 25% 'due to pandemic, sovereign debt downgrade'

Luanda, June.22,2021 (Lusa)- Banco de Fomento Angola (BFA) has announced a 2020 net profit down 25.1% on the previous year, at 90 billion kwanzas (€116 million), citing the effects of the pandemic and the downgrade in the credit rating of Angola's sovereign debt by international agencies.
"BFA obtained a net result of 89,848.6 million kwanzas in 2020, which represents a year-on-year reduction of 25.1% compared to 2019; this reduction is motivated by the registration of 70 million dollars [€58.3 million] in impairments with Securities and Credit assets, following the downward revision of Angola's sovereign debt rating," reads the statement released on Monday in Luanda by the bank.
"In a year unavoidably marked by the pandemic and its economic effects worldwide, BFA registered robust and sustainable growth in its activity, as well as in the number of its Customers, which grew 6.2% to 2.1 million," the statement adds, reporting 31% growth in total assets, a 30% rise in operating income, to 274.2 billion kwanzas and a 38.8% expansion of Customer Resources.
Describing last year as "extremely challenging", the chairman of the executive committee of BFA, quoted in the statement, stressed that "the good operating results, with growth of over 30% in several categories", show the commitment of employees. He concludes with the comment that "2021 will be equally challenging so the Bank considers that it must maintain its course in relation to the provision of products and services that well serve families and companies in Angola, always ensuring a sustainable business and future."
