Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Vasconcellos tried to control Impresa egged on by Salgado - ex-partner

Lisbon, June.9,2021(Lusa) - Businessman Nuno Vasconcellos, owner of Ongoing, tried to control Impresa, encouraged by former BES leader Ricardo Salgado, and to divert attention, according to former partner Rafael Luis Mora.

"The biggest stupidity was going to lunch with Francisco Balsemão [then chairman of Impresa], saying 'you're in financial trouble, let's make a capital increase, and I'll become CEO [executive chairman]'" Rafael Mora began by telling MPs.

According to the manager, when Nuno Vasconcellos told him, "in front of his mother and stepfather [...] said he was going to do that", Rafael Mora warned him that it would be "insane" and that he would be "slaughtered".

The manager is being heard at the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into the losses recorded by Novo Banco and imputed to the Resolution Fund.

Rafael Mora, who revealed he had been a consultant for more than ten years with Francisco Pinto Balsemão and Luís Vasconcellos, Nuno Vasconcellos' father, warned that the idea of taking power at Impresa did not fit "in anyone's head".

"You read the article that Balsemão wrote on the day your father died, in Expresso. Do you think that someone who writes a sensible article - and I knew it was sensible - saying that 'he was my best friend, but he was always my number two', can his son come and be number one?", Rafael Mora told MPs.

According to Nuno Vasconcellos' former partner, "his mother, curiously enough, told him the same thing", as did his stepfather, "but no, he insisted".

Asked by Hugo Carneiro (PSD) if Nuno Vasconcellos "was influenced by BES", Rafael Mora said he believed that "in this decision, he was directly influenced by Ricardo Salgado".

"This is a theory. I have no data, it is my thought, my intuition," he said, recalling that there were "three people close to him, who had some intellectual influence on his behaviour, especially his mother, who was the owner of the group", who could not sway him.

Rafael Mora also said to watch "every week the Expresso from the year before that announcement", considering that "the pet target was always BES".

"If you can divert the attention of Balsemão to a much bigger pet enemy... It happened. From that day onwards, his pet enemy became Ongoing - which had a good reputation, then became a bad one - and curiously BES disappeared from the radar screen", he told the members.

Rafael Mora also said that a few years later, Francisco Pinto Balesemão and Ricardo Salgado "signed peace" and "subsequently BES restructured Impresa's debt".

"It may not be 'vero', but it is sure to be 'vero trovato'. If it has a lion's head, has a lion's mane, has a lion's body, roars like a lion...I can't guarantee it's a lion," he said.

Rafael Mora also added that "the icing on top of the cake was hiring the secret service head, the spies, " Silva Carvalho.

"The hiring of Silva Carvalho is the icing on top of the cake. And when you're doing a lot of stupid things, you end up doing the last one. And from then on, there was only one way out for the group: it had to go to Brazil, there was no other way", he concluded.
