Lusa - Business News - Portugal: VW unit management, works council reach provisional pay deal to 2023

Palmela, Portugal, May 13, 2021 (Lusa) - Management and workers' representatives at Autoeuropa, the Volkswagen-owned car plant that is Portugal's largest exporter of manufactured goods, have reached a provisional pay deal that foresees salary increases of 1.7% in 2022, 1.2% in 2023 and a single payment of €500 euros to each worker this year.
The coordinator of the company's Works Council (CT), Fausto Dionísio, told Lusa that "in addition to the five hundred euros relative to 2021, which will be paid in July, the company also guarantees a 1.7 percent increase in 2022 and 1.2 percent in 2023, with a minimum increase of twenty-five euros for workers with lower salaries.
"I consider that this is a good agreement given the current situation in which we live, because the workers not only do not lose rights, but they guarantee an overall increase of 4.6 percent through to the end of 2023," he said, adding that the company had guaranteed to "make up the difference if the inflation rate is higher during this period.
"Initially the company intended to reduce Saturday and Sunday pay and performance bonuses by fifty percent, but dropped this claim," Dionísio said, adding that workers are also to have improved health insurance.
The provisional agreement at the car plant in Palmela, south of Lisbon, which is due to run until 31 December 2023, is to be discussed at plenary meetings of workers on Thursday and Friday, for subsequent submission to a vote by the workers.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the CT also said that the company had committed itself not to undertake any collective redundancies during the term of the agreement and that, in the event of a significant change in the factory's situation, it would seek the best solutions together with worker representatives.
The deal also states that management and CT undertake to create the conditions to ensure that the manufacture of a new VW product is assigned to the Palmela plant, to offset the end of production of the MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) scheduled for mid-2022, as well as possible fluctuations in the market for the T-Roc, the other model currently being produced at the plant.
Autoeuropa, with more than 5,000 employees, 98% of them on permanent contracts, last year produced 192,000 vehicles and 20 million parts for other plants in the Germany-based group. It alone accounted for 1.4% of Portugal's gross domestic product and 4.7% of the country's exports.
