Lusa - Business News - Portugal: New Porto-Gaia road bridge ready in 2025 at cost of €36.9M

Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto, May.13,2021(Lusa)–The new road bridge over the Douro River will cost 36.9 million euros, including accesses, and will be ready in 2025, indicates the proposal to launch the tender that goes to the city council meeting of Vila Nova de Gaia on Thursday.
At stake is the opening of the international public tender for the design and construction of the project announced in April 2018 by the City Councils of Porto and Gaia regarding a new crossing over the Douro, upstream of the D. Luís I Bridge, between the Freixo (road) and São João (railway) bridges.
According to the proposal, to which Lusa had access, the new bridge, baptised as D. António Francisco dos Santos Bridge, should become operational in early 2025, after two years under construction.
The proposal that the Gaia City Council executive is debating today includes an economic and financial study by the company Exacto Estudos + Planeamento and a report by the Instituto da Construção, which states that the bridge has a total length of 625 metres, 300 of which over the river, and a deck cross-sectional profile of 21.50 metres.
As far as figures are concerned, the part of the bridge over the river will cost more than 16.8 million euros.
The costs for the construction of the deck overland and the access road infrastructures add up to a total of 36.89 million euros.
Having done the sums, Vila Nova de Gaia will have to pay around 21 million euros, which includes 50% of the cost of the river deck, road connections and overland construction.
Porto will have to pay the same amount for the deck, i.e. around 8.4 million, and six million in accesses.
Throughout the proposal it is also defined that this work "is linked to the objective of pedestrianization of the lower deck of the D. Luís I Bridge".
According to the document, the new crossing will serve for car traffic, public transport and will have a bidirectional cycling lane and pavements on both sides.
"With the cycle paths installed on the new bridge and the D. Luís I Bridge, and also on the Douro riverside between the two bridges" a "river front cycling ring of great touristic and leisure potential" will be formed.
The study, which includes estimates on the impact on the value of property in the area of influence of the new bridge, as well as on the tourism rate of the two cities and references to environmental gains, states that the introduction of tolls is not planned.
On the tender formula and means of funding, on February 11, the mayor of Gaia, Eduardo Vítor Rodrigues, told Lusa that the construction of a new bridge makes even more sense in a context where there are other forms of funding, such as the "European bazooka".
