Lusa - Business News - Angola: Spanish PM heads trade visit to country looking for business

Madrid, 06 abr 2021 (Lusa) - The Spanish prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, accompanied by businesspeople is due to arrive Wednesday in Angola, a country that, like Mozambique, he considers "a priority" in his ambitious strategy to increase economic and diplomatic relations with Africa.
"We want to turn this decade into Spain's decade in Africa," the head of the Spanish government stressed last week, adding that "Spain is ever closer to Africa and Africa is ever closer to Spain and also to Europe."
At the time Sánchez presented the "Focus Africa 2023" plan which he hopes will mark a turning point in relations of all kinds with the African continent in order to achieve a new strategic partnership in which Madrid can lead the European Union's action with this part of the world.
Luanda is the first stage of a short trip to Africa that will also take Pedro Sánchez to Senegal on Friday.
A Spanish government source defined three objectives that Madrid aims to achieve with this trip to Luanda: to improve business opportunities, establish close diplomatic cooperation motivated by Angola's position on the continent and improve cooperation in security and defence.
According to the same source there are numerous Spanish companies that intend to apply for the modernisation and diversification programme for the economy proposed by Angola's president, João Lourenço.
The programme approved in 2018 aims to accelerate the diversification of domestic production and generation of Angolan wealth with greater potential for export value generation and import substitution.
The main subsectors involved are food and agro-industry, mineral resources, oil and natural gas, forestry, textiles, clothing and footwear, construction and public works, information technologies and telecommunications, health, education, training and scientific research, tourism and leisure.
Pedro Sánchez leaves Madrid accompanied by several businesspeople on Wednesday afternoon to arrive in Luanda at the end of the day, and official and business contacts will only begin the following day.
On Thursday morning the head of the Spanish government visits an electricity sub-station that Spanish company Elecnor is building to supply power to the municipalities of Bolongongo, Banga and Ngonguembo, in northern Kwanza province.
He will then travel to the D. Bosco Salesian Institute in Luanda, before having a working meeting with the President of Angola, João Lourenço, at the end of which several agreements and memoranda are due to be signed.
According to the same source, the two countries are negotiating the final details of a joint declaration, an agreement for the air transport sector and three memoranda (on fishing, agriculture and industry).
Pedro Sánchez will then be the chief guest at an official lunch hosted by Joao Lourenço before a meeting between businessmen from the two countries attended by both leaders. The Spanish prime minister is due to travel to Senegal in the late afternoon.
Travelling with the head of the Spanish government, among others, are representatives of companies such as Elecnor (infrastructure, engineering, energy), AEE Power (energy infrastructure), Airbus (aerospace and war), TSK (technological innovation), Rio (logistics), Satec (technology services consultants), Globaltec Desarrollos e Ingeniería (construction), Redondo y Garcia (industrial services), Impulso, Ahen Group (engineering and projects).
This is the first visit to Angola by a Spanish prime minister since the historic head of the Spanish government, Filipe Gonzalez, visited the country in 1992.
The Angolan President, João Lourenço, upon taking office in 2017, alluded to the priority relationship he intended to establish with several countries, including Spain, and invited at the time Spanish investors to participate in the economic diversification and privatisation process he intended to implement.
Madrid's economic diplomacy has been making a very strong bid since 2010, following the financial crisis, to extend its traditional area of influence (Latin America and North Africa) to other parts of the globe.
The "Africa Focus 2023" considers as "anchor countries" Nigeria, Ethiopia, South Africa; and as "priority countries" Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique and Angola.
