Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Tourism down almost 80% in January

Lisbon, Mar. 1,2021 (Lusa) - The tourist accommodation sector in Portugal recorded 308,400 guests, and 709,900 overnight stays in January, which corresponds to year-on-year falls of 78.3% and 78.2%, respectively, Statistics Portugal (INE) said on Monday.

Overnight stays in hotels, representing 71.1% of the total, fell by 81.4%, while overnight stays in local accommodation (representing 25.1% of the total) fell by 63.4%, and those in rural tourism and housing (share of 3.8%) dropped by 54.2%.

In January, 54% of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or did not record guest movements (52.3% in December).

The domestic market, which accounts for 60.1% in the activity, contributed 427,000 overnight stays, a decrease of 60.3% (-54.2% in December).

The overnight stays from external markets decreased by 87.0% (-83.2% in the previous month), ending with 282,900.

According to INE data, all the 17 main source markets maintained expressive decreases in January, having represented 84.1% of nights spent by non-residents in tourist accommodation establishments in the month under review.

The biggest reductions were seen in the Chinese (-98.1%), Danish (-95.2%), Russian (-94.8%), Canadian (-94.3%) and US (-94.2%) markets.

In the first month of the year, all regions in the country recorded decreases of over 50%, with the smallest decreases recorded in the Alentejo (-59.3%) and the Centre (-69.3%), while the largest decreases were seen in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (-81.9%), the Autonomous Region of Madeira (-81.2%) and the Algarve (-80.6%).

Lisbon Metropolitan Area had most 27.5% of overnight stays, followed by the North (19.4%) and Algarve (15.3%).

All regions also showed a decrease in the number of nights spent by residents, with the smallest reductions recorded in the Alentejo (-54.9%) and Madeira (-56.1%).

In January, in terms of nights spent by non-residents, the Alentejo showed a decrease of 68.9%, while the other regions showed falls of over 80%.

On the contrary, the average stay in tourist accommodation establishments increased by 0.4% to 2.30 nights, after having fallen 4.9% in December.
