Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: USA funding initiatives to fight organised crime with $1M

Praia, Feb. 22, 2021 (Lusa) – Cabo Verde will carry out several initiatives to strengthen the capacities of criminal justice institutions to fight organised crime, in a project presented today and funded by the United States of America to the tune of 825,000 euros.
The project to fight organised crime will be implemented by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Cabo Verde, a country that remains on the route of organised crime and illicit trafficking.
According to the United States Ambassador in Cabo Verde, Jeff Daigle, several workshops will be held in five Cape Verdean islands (Boa Vista, Fogo, Sal, Santiago and Sao Vicente) aimed at the police, judicial police, public prosecutors, journalists, civil society organisations and other stakeholders, who want to acquire additional skills in combating and preventing organised crime and its damaging effects.
"This is the most recent example of the United States' strong partnership with Cabo Verde," he said, stressing that in the last five years cooperation in the justice sector has taken "many forms," with support in areas such as criminal investigation, repression of drug and people trafficking, cybercrime and criminal rehabilitation.
The project will focus on women, children and the most vulnerable and aims to strengthen criminal justice responses in Cabo Verde for an "effective fight" against illicit trafficking and organised crime.
Ultimately it is expected that criminal justice institutions will have enhanced capacity to investigate, prosecute and adjudicate cases of illicit trafficking and organised crime, as well as strengthened national capacity to analyse, investigate and prosecute crimes of money laundering and financial crime.
Cabo Verde's justice minister, Janine Lélis, said that this is an "important project" that reinforces the importance of cooperation to combat organised crime and international trafficking.
"When we are working against organised crime we are working for Cabo Verde, but we are also working for the world and the region," she pointed out, hoping that this funding of US$1 million (825,000 euros) from the United States will translate into "efficient and effective responses.
"I am confident that this will be one more step towards bringing what is essential for the functioning of justice on behalf of the people of Cabo Verde," said Janine Lélis.
Just over a month ago, following an international attack on the State's Private Technological Network, Cabo Verde's president, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, asked the Armed Forces to prepare "very seriously for the country's cyber defence".
The Minister of Justice said a National Cyberity Security Plan exists, under the command of the national security advisor, and that the country has joined the Council of Europe's Budapest Convention on cybercrime to empower law enforcers in the investigation of cybercrimes and the production of evidence.
In May 2019, the director of Cabo Verde's Judicial Police (PJ), António Sebastião Sousa, said that organised crime takes advantage of the country's geographical location, which lies "on important air and sea routes" and therefore needs international cooperation.
When he took office in October 2019, attorney general, Luís José Tavares Landim, placed the fight against economic crime and organised crime as priorities of his mandate.
