Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Researchers in Porto developing antidotes to snake venom for Africa, Asia

Porto, Jan.19,2021(Lusa)- Researchers from the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto (FCUP) are developing antidotes to snake venom that will be mostly distributed in rural and economically disadvantaged communities in Africa and Asia, as said on Tuesday.
"Every year there are more than five million people worldwide who are bitten by snakes, of which about half a million suffer amputations and irreversible damage, and more than 100,000 die as a result of the bite," the FCUP said.
In a statement, the FCUP explained that researchers from the Computational Biochemistry Group will develop antidotes from small chemical molecules with great stability and durability at current temperatures.
The project, entitled Murderous Venom and financed in €250,000 by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), is coordinated by FCUP and has a network of international collaborations.
Quoted in the statement, Pedro Alexandrino, head of the project, said "current therapy is based on antibodies, which require a whole chain of refrigerated transport and storage, and are very expensive, which prevents them from being made available to disadvantaged populations living in remote rural areas of Africa and Asia, where most attacks actually take place".
The network of collaborators will make it possible to test the antidotes in a real context, i.e. on animals to which the poison is administered and still produce it on a large scale.
The researcher said that the drug could be injected by the victims immediately after the attack, allowing them to get to hospitals still alive without irreversible consequences.
To reach the rural and economically disadvantaged populations of Africa and Asia, the researchers want to use cheap compounds that are immediately accessible to these communities.
Researchers from the University of Costa Rica, the University of Cuenca (Ecuador), the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Brazil) and the University of Tezpur (India) are participating in this study.
