Lusa - Business News - EU/Presidency: Commission president counting on PM's 'experience, dedication

Lisbon, Jan.15,2021(Lusa)- The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said on Friday that she was "very happy" to meet Portugal's prime minister António Costa in Lisbon, and that she was counting on his "experience and dedication" during the country's six-month presidency of the Council of the European Union.
"I am very happy to meet António Costa," wrote von der Leyen shortly after her arrival at Lisbon's Belém Cultural Centre on the commission's inaugural visit for presidency. "I know I can count on his experience and dedication."
The commission president wished Portugal "much success" with the presidency and said that she was "looking forward" to working with the government over the next six months.
Von der Leyen and several members of her EU executive team were on Friday in Portugal for the traditional visit to the country taking over the EU Council presidency. Given the Covid-19 pandemic, the visit has been scaled down, with von der Leyen accompanied by just eight commissioners rather than all of them, and with the programme reduced to one day instead of the usual two.
Von der Leyen arrived for the meetings accompanied by her three executive vice-presidents, Frans Timmermans (responsible for the European Green Deal portfolio), Valdis Dombrovskis (An Economy that Works for People) and Margrethe Vestager (A Europe Fit for the Digital Age), and the EU's Vice-President and High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell.
The delegation also includes the commissioner from Portugal, Elisa Ferreira (Cohesion and Reforms), as well as Nicolas Schmit (Social Affairs - one of the main priorities of the Portuguese Presidency), Margaritis Schinas (Promoting the European Way of Life) and Maros Sefcovic (Interinstitutional Relations).
The programme of the visit includes a bilateral meeting between Von der Leyen and Costa, bilateral and themed group meetings between the other commissioners and members of Portugal's government, and a plenary meeting.
The working sessions were to focus on the various priorities of Portugal's six-month presidency - Resilient Europe, Social Europe, Green Europe, Digital Europe, and Global Europe - but also, more specifically, on key current issues for the EU, such as migration and health.
After a joint news conference with Costa, scheduled for 2 p.m., Von der Leyen was to hold a meeting by videoconference with the speaker of Portugal's parliament, Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues. That was to be followed by a meeting, also by videoconference, with the other commissioners and leaders of parliamentary groups in Portugal's parliament.
Von der Leyen also had a meeting scheduled with Portugal's president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, before a working dinner with Costa.
Portugal took over its fourth presidency of the EU Council on 1 January, succeeding Germany, whose presidency started in July 2020. Portugal's stint is to run until 30 June, when it hands over to Slovenia.
