Lusa - Business News - Portugal: UK suspension of flights is 'absurd' decision - foreign minister

Lisbon, Jan. 15, 2021 (Lusa) - Portugal's foreign minister, Augusto Santos Silva, has considered the United Kingdom's decision to suspend flights from Portugal absurd and illogical, a sudden and unexpected measure whose grounds he said he did not know.

"In our opinion, it is illogical. In the first place, it is a sudden and unexpected measure and this is the first element of negative surprise. Secondly, it is a measure that hits hard on people who have not been properly warned for it. It was announced at 5 p.m. on one day to come into force at 4 p.m. the following day," the head of Portuguese diplomacy told Lusa on Thursday.

"It is also an absurd measure, the foundations of which we do not know. Suspending flights from Portugal on the grounds of connections between Portugal and Brazil is, with all due respect, completely absurd," he said, adding that he had already asked his British counterpart for a conversation to understand the grounds for the decision.

Santos Silva said the London decision is all the more absurd because, according to the communiqué that came out of the British transport ministry, the measure is the new strain of Covid-19 discovered in Brazil that there is no evidence that it exists in Portugal.

"But the British decision to suspend flights also harms all Portuguese passengers and that makes no sense," he said.

According to Santos Silva, travel from Brazil to Portugal on Thursday can only take place for essential reasons - travel by Portuguese citizens or residents in Portugal, or travel by non-EU citizens who have to travel to Portugal for professional, family, study or other ponderous reasons.

"There are no tourist trips. Passengers travelling from Brazil to Portugal, whatever their nationality, have to undergo tests within 72 hours before boarding and this test has to be negative. This means that we are all careful when travelling from third countries to Portugal, including Brazil," he argued.

"We have asked the British government for clarification through the embassy. I have contacted my British colleague [Dominic Raab], and we are arranging a conversation so that I understand the reason for this measure. It is unexpected because it is sudden, given the short time between the announcement of the measure and its entry into force and, above all, because its foundations are incomprehensible," Santos Silva said.

"We believe in the value of reciprocity and when the British strain was discovered, we, like virtually all EU states, began to demand a negative test for Covid-19 from passengers coming from the UK and to limit travel to those for essential reasons. But we never stopped air traffic between Portugal and the UK," he said.

Santos Silva stressed that people travelling to or from Portugal do so not because they come for tourism.

"They come because they work, they are studying, they have relatives, both Portuguese in the UK and British in Portugal. They need to make these trips not to have fun, but for absolutely essential reasons," he said.

On the conversation with Dominic Raab, the head of Portuguese diplomacy said he had received a message from his British counterpart in which he was told that his officials would arrange a call.

The British government announced today that it would suspend air links from Portugal and Cabo Verde to England to try to prevent the entry of the Brazilian strain of SARS-CoV-2. Also, it banned arrivals from Brazil and other South American countries.

"I have taken the urgent decision to ban arrivals from Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Cabo Verde, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela as of Friday after information about a new variant in Brazil," the transport minister, Grant Shapps, said on Twitter.

Travel from Portugal to the United Kingdom will also be suspended due to its strong ties with Brazil, acting as another way to reduce the risk of importing infections, he said.
