Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Restaurants expect over 100,000 redundancies in Q1- PRO.VAR

Lisbon, Jan. 12, 2021 (Lusa) - PRO.VAR - Promote and Innovate the National Catering Industry on Tuesday warned that redundancies in the sector could exceed 100,000 in the first quarter of this year, according to a catering industry survey focused on restaurants.

"The restaurant business people, especially restaurants, say that they will have to lay off between three and four workers per establishment, which is expected to exceed 100,000 workers in this first quarter," the association warned, based on the results of a survey carried out between 4 and 10 January, with valid answers from 542 restaurants, which it asked how many workers they would have to lay off with the same losses and without support"

Faced with the imminence of a new general lockdown, similar to that of spring and which provides for the closure of catering establishments, PRO.VAR recalled that the sector is exhausted after ten months of severe restrictions accompanied by insufficient support.

The association also warned of the new consequences of a second lockdown, since the sector has no financial or mental health, and therefore without liquidity and with the accumulated stress.

According to the association, most catering companies consider that takeaway is not the solution, since they only keep the kitchens running, with fewer workers, but at a higher cost so they prefer to close down completely.

PRO.VAR asked the government to support the sector companies immediately and proposed the creation of a 2.0 SUPPORT, for the last quarter of 2020, allocating support of €280 million (non-refundable support of fixed costs, on the same basis of calculation, 20% of the estimated losses of €1.4 billion, the result of 70% of a year-on-year loss of €2 billion), divided into tiers that include different ceilings for losses of more than 25% and 40%.

If the government does not inject adequate and immediate liquidity into companies, it said, about a third of companies in the catering sector that are already in default with the state, workers and suppliers, are considering not reopening after a new lockdown.

PRO-VAR estimated that the situation will get out of hand concerning defaults as more than two thirds (70.1%) of companies say they are unable to meet future obligations.

"The weakening and disappearance of thousands of microenterprises will leave deep scars, we will be on the verge of the end of a sector as we know it, running serious risks of losing competitiveness and influence to the most direct competitors, and no longer being on the radar of the world's main tourist destinations," it added.

António Costa said that there is a broad consensus that the general containment measures to be enacted should last one month and that Portugal is experiencing a huge spread of Covid-19 cases.

In front of journalists, at the end of another meeting to analyse the evolution of the epidemiological situation in Portugal, at Infarmed, in Lisbon, Costa considered that the weekend lockdown measures adopted so far had proved to be insufficient, but that they allowed the second wave to be controlled.

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 1,945,437 deaths as a result of over 90.8 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

In Portugal, 8,080 people have died out of 496,552 confirmed cases of infection, according to the most recent health authority (DGS) bulletin.
