Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Banco Montepio obtains authorisation to cut up to 400 jobs over 3yrs

Lisbon, Jan.12,2021(Lusa)- Banco Montepio, the banking arm of Portugal's leading mutual association, Montepio Geral, has obtained authorisation to dismiss up to 400 employees between now and September 2023, as a company undergonig restructuring, the Ministry of Employment, Solidarity and Social Security confirmed on Tuesday.

"The status of company in restructuring has been attributed to Caixa Económica - Montepio Geral in the period until September 2023 and up to the limit of 400 workers, after analysis by the Institute of Social Security and IAPMEI and after consultation with social partners and the Portuguese Banking Association," reads a written response from the ministry initially sent to the online financial newspaper Eco and since confirmed by Lusa.

It was already known that Montepio was to press ahead with a "broad" plan to reduce its workforce, according to the National Union of Technical Banking Staff, the Union of Northern Bank Employees and the Independent Banking Union, which held a meeting with the executive board met on 23 September.

In a statement, the three unions say that on that day they met the chief executive of Banco Montepio, Pedro Leitão, who "presented a restructuring project that contemplates an extended plan of early retirement and termination of employment contracts by mutual agreement that will run until 2021" but that they say does not specify how many jobs are to be lost.

Contacted by Lusa at that time, a Montepio official said only that it was known that the bank "is adjusting processes and studying its size, as was shared with the employees and their representatives" and that it would maintain the practice of sharing "always" all "relevant information ... with all those who are part of it" before it is made public.

Portugal's leading banks are preparing a new round of job cuts, with workers to leave their posts immediately, in a bid to cut costs to cope with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, weakening profitability and the digitalisation of operations.
