Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Public sector union says all forms of struggle 'on the table'

Lisbon, Jan.12,2021(Lusa)- The leader of Portugal's 'Frente Comum' of Public Administration Trade Unions said today that he will hear workers on the government's proposed wage increases and that "all forms of struggle will be on the table".

On leaving a meeting with the government, the leader of the Communist-party backed 'Frente Comum', Sebastião Santana, once again criticised the government's proposal that "leaves out around half a million public sector workers" by only updating salaries below €800.

"The government has items in the state budget that could be revised in favour of salaries, but insists that it has no margin to do so and we will take this issue to the workers to decide what we are going to do on this matter," he said.

"All forms of struggle will be on the table," Sebastião Santana added, stressing that the 'Frente Comum' unions"do not give up salary increases, fairer careers or a pay scale that does justice to their seniority and the complexity of their duties.

In today's additional meeting with the unions, the third on salary increases, the government kept its proposal to update the basic salary of the public administration unchanged at €20, to €665 (in line with the national minimum wage) and to increase by the next three wage levels by €10, which cover salaries up to €791.91.

The government also undertook to begin negotiations on the revision of the system and performance evaluation of the civil service (SIADAP) by March.

The 'Frente Comum' said the current agreement "should be revoked," said Sebastião Santana.

"The current system is very difficult to improve because it suffers from enormous problems, and its main objective is very far from evaluating workers," the union leader said.

According to Sebastião Santana, the agreement that is in force aims instead "to maintain at least 75% of workers in exactly the same pay position for 10 years.

"From here it can be extrapolated that 75% of public administration workers have four wage changes during their entire careers," the leader of the Common Front stressed.

According to the government, the agreement will be revised to speed up the civil servants' career progression.
