Lusa - Business News - Portugal: BorgWarner to invest €7M to expand factory in Viana do Castelo

Viana do Castelo, Nov. 27, 2020 (Lusa) - The US multinational BorgWarner, which manufactures automotive components, will invest seven million euros in 2021 to expand the plant at the Lanheses business park in Viana do Castelo, creating 38 new jobs.
The multinational set up with a 25 million-euro investment in the capital of Alto Minho in 2014 and at the time estimated to create 500 jobs, but currently employs 966 workers.
Today, the new investment contract was signed at the Viana do Castelo town hall, and at a press conference, Hugo Silva, of BorgWarner, explained that the expansion "results from the potential increase in turnover forecast for the coming years.
"The project involves an investment of around seven million euros and includes an increase in production area of 5,800 square metres," he said.
The mayor of Viana do Castelo said that work on the expansion would begin in early 2021 and that 38 new jobs would be created.
"This investment will generate more economy and more jobs and help the region and the country to increase exports as it is a very exporting company," he said.
According to José Maria Costa, the companies in the Car Cluster in Lanheses employ around 3,000 workers.
The socialist mayor added that in the three business zones of the municipality (Lanheses, São Romão do Neiva and Alvarães) there are nine companies in the automobile sector.
In 2014, incentives granted by the municipality of Viana do Castelo prevented the departure of BorgWarner from Portugal and is now based in the neighbouring municipality of Valença.
At the time, the multinational benefited from a number of exemptions from infrastructure charges, support for land acquisition and monitoring of licensing procedures, among other measures.
The municipality also contracted a specialist company for 40,000 euros to provide technical support to the multinational company in building the new factory.
The group is a world leader in clean technology and efficiency solutions for combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles. With plants and technical installations in 99 locations in 24 countries, the company employs around 48,000 people.
