Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: NGOs criticise president's statements on disinformation

Maputo, Nov. 26, 2020 (Lusa) - Mozambican non-governmental organisations (NGOs) on Thursday criticised statements by the country's president, Filipe Nyusi, who on Wednesday accused the media of manipulating the conflict in Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country.

The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), said in a statement, it strongly condemned the statements of the president as an attack on freedom of expression, press and thought.

According to the NGO, the statement may exacerbate the violation of human rights, the suffocation of news coverage and individual freedoms perpetrated by the Defence and Security Forces (FDS), all the more so because they are orders coming from the Commander-in-Chief, compliance with which is unquestionable.

On the other hand, the CDD said that the position reveals nervousness, justified by the lack of a clear response to the conflict in Cabo Delgado, arguing that spaces for sharing information should be expanded and the media should be assumed as partners for a better understanding by society of events in Cabo Delgado.

The Institute for Southern African Media (Misa Moçambique) said that Nyusi has ordered the FDS to act on their own against the media considered to be errant.

"This order constitutes a threat to press freedom, especially in a context where journalists in Cabo Delgado have been victims of persecution, including arbitrary arrests and kidnappings," it stressed.

Filipe Nyusi said on Wednesday he was concerned that, in a saga of distortion of reality and the disclosure of unrealities, some media are being used, which instead of being guided by professionalism, end up deliberately or innocently acting to the advantage of their enemies.

Without mentioning which bodies he was referring to, the Mozambican head of state was speaking at the opening of the 21st Coordinating Council of the Ministry of National Defence, in the Mozambican capital.

Filipe Nyusi noted that the information on social media and by some information bodies is the result of invented facts and aims at manipulation of public opinion.

The president also accused members of the FDS of being at the service of terrorists and evildoers who attack the country, advocating the purging of these members.

The armed violence in Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, is causing a humanitarian crisis with around 2,000 deaths and 500,000 displaced people, without housing or food, mainly concentrated in the provincial capital, Pemba.

The province where the largest private investment in Africa is being made for the exploitation of natural gas has been under attack by insurgents for three years and some of the incursions have been claimed by the jihadist Islamic State group since 2019.
