Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Hazard pay for health workers extended to other essential services
Lisbon,Nov.26,2020(Lusa)-The hazard pay foreseen for health workers involved in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic in Portugal's draft state budget for 2021 is now to be extended to other workers in all essential services, under a Communist Party proposal that was adopted by parliament at the tail-end of the committee stage of the bill. "The extraordinary risk allowance provided for in this article is also allocated in 2021, with the necessary adaptations, to other professionals in essential services under the responsibility of the State," reads the Communist proposal, which was approved during the vote in the committee stage of the State Budget for 2021, with the votes in favour of all parties barring the centre-right Social Democratic Party (PSD), conservative People's Party (CDS-PP) and Liberal Initiative (IL), all three of which abstained. The amount of the extraordinary allowance is to correspond, in the case of these professionals, to 10% on top of basic salary for the days on which they actually work, taking into account their exposure to the risk of contagion with the coronavirus that causes Covid-19 in the exercise of their functions, with a ceiling of 50% of the Social Support Index (IAS) per month (currently €438.81), in terms to be defined by statute. In the draft budget submitted to parliament by the Socialist government, the payment of extraordinary hazard pay for combatting the pandemic is foreseen, but was limited to health professionals working in the National Health Service (SNS) and staff of other Ministry of Health bodies, including professionals working for the national ambulance service, INEM. For health professionals, the extra pay corresponds to 20% of the basic monthly remuneration of each worker, with a ceiling of 50% of the value of the monthly IAS. Payment is to be every two months.
