Lusa - Business News - Portugal: TAP union says 3,000 jobs have been lost at the airline group

Lisbon,Nov.24,2020(Lusa)-Portugal's Aviation and Airport Workers' Union (Sitava) said on Tuesday that 3,000 jobs had been lost in the four TAP group companies due to the non-renewal of fixed-term contracts and the cancellation of temporary contracts.

"We are all aware that since the beginning of the pandemic crisis, TAP and the other companies of the group have decided not to renew fixed-term contracts, and to cancel contracts with temporary employment companies," Sitava said in a statement.

"Perhaps those who threaten us [with layoffs] have no interest in doing math because if they wanted to do it they would know that in the four companies of the group alone (including SPDH, the Groundforce handling company) some 3,000 jobs have already been lost," he added.

According to the union, the airline has made "blind cuts" which are causing "serious damage" and have led to the company having to hire passenger support services from Lufthansa group LGSP.

"They say in a threatening tone that there are going to be redundancies. Once again, we only have to tell these gentlemen that if this is not bad faith, then they are still distracted", the union considered.

Sitava also accused the airline's board of directors and executive committee of spreading news in the media almost daily, "threatening workers on the eve of the restructuring project.

The representatives of aviation and airport workers also reiterated that TAP's "sole responsibility for the worrying situation" is the health crisis that is going on, and therefore considered that "it cannot be the workers who are responsible for anything".

Regarding the reduction of the fleet, which has also been mentioned in the restructuring plan to be presented in Brussels by 10 December, the union said that this was only news "for the distracted," given that the fleet renewal that TAP carried out in 2018 and 2019 had already assumed that the older aircraft would be phased out during 2021.

"With this reality, it is only through bad faith that the media can now plant the restructuring of TAP, which requires the reduction of the fleet. This is false. TAP's fleet - TAP and Portugalia - will be reduced with the older units going away which will obviously reduce the number of aircraft in both fleets.", he underlined.

The minister for infrastructure and housing, Pedro Nuno Santos, announced in parliament on 4 November that "the first phase" of TAP's restructuring plan was concluded and that negotiations with the unions would begin.

"We have an airline that is oversized for the current reality and we have to achieve a restructuring process that guarantees that the airline will be viable and sustainable," Santos said.

The minister also told parliament that TAP will need to use the full €1.2 billion of the state loan by the end of the year.

On 15 October, Santos announced in parliament that 1,600 workers would leave the TAP group by the end of the year, with 1,200 employees already leaving.

Santos, in a hearing in the Commission for Economy, Innovation, Public Works and Housing, denied figures presented by the Left Bloc, which highlighted the departure of 1,500 TAP crew members, stating that this would be 80% of the workforce and that the 1,600 workers who will leave are from the entire group and not just the airline.
