Lusa - Business News - Angola: Oil, diamond companies to be partially privatised by 2022 - Minister

Luanda, Nov.24,2020(Lusa)-The Angolan government is to sell part of oil and diamond companies Sonangol and Endiama on the stock exchange in 2021 or early 2022, the finance minister, Vera Daves de Sousa said on Tuesday.

"We are aiming for the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022 to start the process of privatising large companies such as Sonangol or Endiama," she said during the Bloomberg Invest in Africa conference, which is taking place today in a virtual format.

The sale is part of the intention of the second-biggest oil producer in sub-Saharan Africa to raise funds and restart positive economic growth that has not happened for five years.

So far, Angola has sold 30 companies via a privatisation programme that runs until 2022, with a total of 195 companies that are due to be sold.

The deadline, however, "depends on how quickly we can organise these companies and on the guarantee of compliance with 'due diligence' to capture the interest of quality investors," Daves added.

In her speech at the conference organised by Bloomberg, Daves said she hoped that 2021 would be a "turning point" in the economic recession that the country had been experiencing since 2016, and that she expected stagnation for that year.

Growth, she said, would be sustained in the non-oil sector, including agriculture and mining, to which the results of the reforms launched by the executive over the last three years would add.

In relation to public debt, which the minister elected as the main priority, along with health, Vera Daves said that she did not intend to issue new debt until the main international financial markets "regained confidence" and assumed that the government was aware of the difficulties.

"We are fully aware that this is not an easy time," the minister said, asking for patience from the young people who in recent weeks have been demonstrating in Angola asking for better living conditions.
