Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Legionnaires' hospitalisation numbers fall to 14

Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal,Nov.20,2020(Lusa)-The number of people admitted to hospitals in Greater Porto due to an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease, which affects the municipalities of Matosinhos, Vila do Conde and Póvoa de Varzim, has decreased today to 14, after three people recovered from the disease.

According to a source from the Northern Regional Health Administration (ARS-Norte), the three discharges occurred in the Póvoa de Varzim/Vila do Conde Hospital Centre, which now has only one patient with Legionnaires requiring care.

Also today, and for the second day in a row, there has been no increase in the overall number of diagnosed cases, which has stabilised at 85, as has the number of deaths from complications associated with the disease, which remains at nine.

Pedro Hispano Hospital in Matosinhos, which received most of the patients, and where there were seven deaths, still has 10 people in hospital, while at São João Hospital in Porto, which provided assistance to 10 people with Legionnaires, three people are still receiving assistance.

Overall, 85 people have been diagnosed with the disease since 29 October, 14 of who are still hospitalized and nine have died.

The origin of the outbreak remains undetected, but ARS-Norte reported on Tuesday that, "as a precautionary measure, the Health Authority of ULS Matosinhos has suspended the operation of the cooling towers of two industries, located in Matosinhos.

Dairy company LongaVida, in Matosinhos, confirmed on Wednesday that it was one of the companies that had shut down its cooling towers "on a preventive basis" and is awaiting the results of further analyses.

Ramirez, also in the municipality of Matosinhos, another of the companies that received an order to suspend its cooling towers, announced on Thursday that the tests carried out on the cooling tower were negative, and has started using them again.

Today, Mar Shopping, also in Matosinhos, announced that the tests carried out on the presence of Legionnaires in the cooling tower of the shopping centre "had a negative result".

"This conclusion confirms the result of the analysis carried out by an external company certified for that purpose, which MAR Shopping Matosinhos uses for monthly monitoring of its water points, the last of which was carried out on 13 November," the commercial area said in a statement.

Matosinhos City Hall said it was "closely following the outbreak", considering that "regardless of where the facilities are located, the important thing is that the source has been identified and that this situation may soon be overcome".

Last week, the Public Prosecutor announced the opening of an enquiry to investigate the causes of the outbreak.

Legionnaire's disease, caused by the bacterium 'Legionella pneumophila', is contracted by inhalation of contaminated water vapour droplets (aerosols) so small that they carry the bacteria into the lungs and deposit it in the lung alveoli.
