Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Online classes and shopping doubled during Covid-19 pandemic

Lisbon, Nov.20,2020(Lusa)- The proportion of people who used the Internet for educational purposes more than doubled during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to data released on Friday by the Statistics Portugal (INE), which also shows an increase in online purchases.

Although users continued to use the internet mainly to communicate and access information in 2020, it was in learning-related activities that there was the biggest increase.

According to INE data, the proportions of users who communicated with teachers or colleagues via educational portals more than doubled from 14.5% in 2019 to 30.8% in 2020, and who attended online courses was 18.0% compared to 7.7% last year.

The data comes from the survey on the use of information and communication technologies by households, which also points to an increase in the percentage of e-commerce users.

This activity recorded the biggest increase since 2002, with 44.5% of respondents ordering online in the 12 months prior to the interview and 35.2% in the previous three months, representing an increase of around seven percentage points (p.p.) compared to 2019.

"The number of orders through e-commerce increased significantly: the group of users who placed 3 to 5 orders increased 4.0 p.p., those who placed 6 to 10 orders increased 9.5 p.p. and those who placed more than 10 orders increased 6.9 p.p.," INE said, adding that the value of purchases also increased.

Overall, the number of Internet users increased during the pandemic and this year 84.5% of households had an Internet connection at home, with 81.7% using broadband.

This increase, INE says, runs counter to the stable performance trend of the previous two years.

By income bracket, higher-income households have the highest levels of Internet access (96.8%) and broadband (94.5%).

At the other extreme, the 1st quintile (20% with lower income), only 66.9% have access to the Internet at home and 62.4% through broadband.

The INE report also highlights that 31.1% of users were working from home, mainly in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area where this proportion was 43.2%.

For the vast majority of these workers (29.6% of all users employed), working from home was associated with the Covid-19 pandemic.
