Lusa - Business News - Macau: GDP falls 63.8% Q3 YoY, slightly less than Q2 fall

Macau,China,Nov.20,2020(Lusa)-Macau's GDP fell by 63.8% annually in the third quarter, a figure which moderated the fall in the previous quarter, which was 68%, it was reported on Friday.
Macau's economy, which is highly dependent on casinos and Chinese tourism, has suffered this year from a sharp drop in visitor numbers due to the pandemic in a territory that received almost 40 million tourists in 2019.
According to a statement from the Statistics and Census Bureau, the improvement in results in the third quarter was due to "an increase in the number of incoming visitors, driven by a relaxation of the policy of restrictions on tourist travel from Mainland China to Macau," which also halted the drop in services exports, "with an annual drop of 87.5 percent.
With the lifting of restrictions on tourist travel from Mainland China to Macau at the end of August, the number of visitors "increased 14-fold" compared to the previous quarter.
Still, there were "falls of 93.6% in exports of gambling services and 87.9% in exports of other tourist services," with exports of goods up 252.2% in the quarter under review, according to the statement.
Domestic demand also improved in the last quarter, with an annual drop of around 6.1%, "essentially due to the smoothing of the fall in private consumption spending curve," the note said.
Imports of goods rose 17.6 percent, while imports of services fell 44.1 percent, Statistics and Census Services reported.
In the quarter under review, "the implicit GDP deflator, which measures the overall change in prices, recorded an annual decline of 0.6%", according to the same source.
The note also points out that the "consumption subsidy plan" launched by the Government to combat the effects of the crisis caused by the pandemic "had a boosting effect, resulting in the attenuation to 8.4% of the downward curve of final household consumption expenditure in the local market".
Government final consumption spending "increased from 16.3 percent in the second quarter to 18.6 percent in the third," due to "expenditure on pandemic prevention" and "continued financial assistance measures" launched by the executive, according to the same source, which also noted "year-on-year increases of 33.9 percent in net purchases of goods and services and 2.7 percent in compensation of employees.
Investment in fixed assets fell 5.6% year on year, with a 10.3% drop in investment in the construction sector.
Investment in public works fell 18.7% annually and investment in equipment fell 28.2%, according to the same source.
In the private sector, investment in construction fell 7.2% year-on-year, while investment in equipment rose 22.9%.
Trade in goods showed an improvement, with annual increases of 17.6% in imports of goods and 252.2% in exports.
"In the first three quarters of 2020, the Macau economy recorded a year-on-year decrease of 59.8% in real terms, dragged down by the impact of the pandemic," the Statistics and Census Service said.
As for the main components of GDP expenditure, "government final consumption expenditure and exports of goods increased by 13.4% and 75.4% respectively".
In contrast, there were "18.1% falls in private consumption expenditure, 15.5% in investment, 12.6% in imports of goods, 41.3% in imports of services and 79.6% in exports of services, with an 83.6% fall in exports of gambling services", the note concludes.
