Lusa - Business News - Portugal: 'It's an affront' that tourism is excluded from €750M credit line for export industry - CTP

Lisbon, Nov. 20, 2020 (Lusa) – The Portuguese Tourism Confederation (CTP) on Friday considered it "a serious affront and carelessness" that the government had not included tourism companies in the credit line for the export industry approved by the government earlier this month.
This is "an affront and a serious oversight, especially given the importance of tourism in our economy," the fact that the government "does not include tourism companies in the credit line for the export industry, which is part of the package of measures to support the economy approved by the Council of Ministers on 5 May," warned the CTP in a statement.
Chairman of the CTP, Francisco Calheiros, noted that "Tourism is the country's biggest economic export activity, and in 2019 accounted for 52.3% of services exports and 19.7% of total exports.
In this context, he adds, the confederation "does not understand and cannot accept" this decision by the government, saying it reveals an "absolute ignorance" of the importance of tourism for the economy.
The Minister of Economy, Pedro Siza Vieira, said at the time that a credit line of 750 million euros would be made available for the export industry where there would be the possibility of converting 20 percent of the credit granted in the form of non-refundable funds, if jobs were maintained.
In this case, the credit would be determined according to the number of jobs.
