Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Journalists fleeing Cabo Delgado violence report seeing corpses, lost minors in bush

Maputo, Nov. 20, 2020 (Lusa) - Journalists who witnessed rebel attacks and survived for a fortnight in the bush of Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, have arrived at a safe location and reported seeing many abandoned bodies and single children lost in the bush.
"The situation is out of control, there are many children, alone and lost in the bush," said Beatriz João, a journalist from Rádio Comunitária São Francisco de Assis, located in the district of Muidumbe.
"I met many of these children while walking for miles towards Montepuez [where the refuge centre is]," she said to the National Community Radio Forum. She also said that the nine journalists from that station who fled a fortnight ago were safe, as were most of the population.
But many residents, in an uncertain number, could not escape, said the communiqué.
The Parish Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is being used in recent days as a base for insurgents, she said.
"They [insurgents] have abandoned the previous place where they were fixed because of the smell of the corpses that are in the streets," she added.
Moisés José, another of the journalists who was also fleeing in the bush, said that the insurgents have captured numerous women.
"One of them was my 27-year-old daughter who fortunately managed to escape into the bush and join us," he said.
At the place where she had been a refugee for days, there were many bodies in the decomposition phase, he said.
The terror in Muidumbe district began at 4.30 a.m. on 31 October.
"We began to hear gunshots nearby," reported Hilário Tomás, another community radio journalist.
"When the insurgents realised that the communities were fleeing, they began to follow them and kill anyone they met along the way. I ran away with my family and we stayed hidden in the bush for more than 10 days," he said.
Muidumbe was the most recent district taken by rebels this year, after having already occupied others, for several days, still keeping control of Mocímboa da Praia, a coastal town and one of the main ones in the province, according to the most recent report on the conflict, prepared by a parliamentary committee.
Meanwhile, the commander-general of the Mozambique police, Bernardino Rafael, said Thursday that the defence and security forces had recovered Muidumbe district headquarters.
The armed violence in Cabo Delgado is causing a humanitarian crisis with around 2,000 deaths and 500,000 displaced people, without housing or food, mainly in the provincial capital, Pemba.
The province where the largest private investment in Africa is being made for the exploitation of natural gas has been under attack by insurgents for three years and some of the incursions have been claimed by the 'jihadist' Islamic state group since 2019.
